Lead environmental performance on a landmark renewable energy project.
Symal Infrastructure is delivering the Gawaya Baya Wind Farm, a major renewable energy project in North Queensland, and we're seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Advisor to join our project HSEQ team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced environmental professional to take a senior role on a $347M major infrastructure project, working alongside an experienced project leadership team and playing a key role in driving environmental compliance, sustainability and performance across the project.
The project comprises approximately 400MW of renewable energy generation, 68 wind turbine generators, 78km of access roads, significant bulk earthworks, concrete works, drainage infrastructure and major bridge construction, with a peak workforce of approximately 300 personnel
The Opportunity
As Senior Environmental Advisor, you'll be a key environmental leader on the project, providing specialist advice and practical support to the Project Manager, Environment & Sustainability Manager, construction teams, subcontractors and client representatives.
You'll have a strong field presence and be responsible for ensuring environmental requirements are embedded into day-to-day construction activities, while proactively identifying risks, driving compliance and supporting the project to achieve its environmental and sustainability objectives.
You'll be responsible for:
Leading the implementation and ongoing review of the Project Environmental Management Plan, Sustainability Management Plans and associated environmental controls.
Providing senior technical advice to project leadership, construction teams and subcontractors on environmental risks, compliance and best practice.
Driving environmental compliance across construction activities and ensuring legislative, contractual and project requirements are understood and achieved.
Leading environmental inspections, audits, monitoring programs and risk assessments.
Identifying environmental risks and implementing practical mitigation and control measures.
Managing environmental approvals, permits, licences and associated conditions.
Reviewing and providing input into environmental documentation, including EMPs, SEPs, SMPs, SWMS, procedures and construction methodologies.
Maintaining a strong field presence and working directly with supervisors,
engineers and subcontractors to ensure environmental controls are effective.
Leading the identification, investigation and close-out of environmental non-conformances and corrective actions.
Supporting and, where required, leading environmental incident investigations and ensuring appropriate preventative actions are implemented.
Supporting regulatory engagement and environmental reporting requirements.
Preparing environmental and sustainability reporting for project leadership, senior management and clients.
Supporting project audits and maintaining compliance with relevant environmental management standards, including ISO *****.
Working closely with the Client HSEQ team and participating in environmental audits, risk workshops, project meetings and incident investigations.
Delivering environmental training, inductions and toolbox sessions to employees and subcontractors.
Coaching and mentoring junior environmental team members and supporting their professional development.
Identifying opportunities to improve environmental performance through innovation, technology and industry-leading practices.
Contributing to a strong environmental culture across the project and ensuring environmental performance remains a priority throughout delivery.
About You
We're looking for a hands‐on and commercially aware environmental professional who can operate confidently within a major construction project workplace.
You'll ideally have:
A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Natural Resource Management, Earth Sciences, Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience in a Senior Environmental Advisor or Environmental Advisor role within civil construction, infrastructure, resources, renewable energy or major projects.
Strong knowledge of Australian environmental legislation, approvals, compliance requirements and construction environmental management.
Proven experience implementing Environmental Management Plans and environmental controls across major construction projects.
Strong experience conducting environmental inspections, audits, monitoring and risk assessments.
Experience managing environmental incidents, investigations, corrective actions and regulatory requirements.
The ability to provide confident and practical environmental advice to project managers, engineers, supervisors and subcontractors.
Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to build effective relationships with clients, regulators and project teams.
Excellent communication, reporting and documentation skills.
A proactive approach with the confidence to challenge poor environmental practices and drive positive outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to mentor and support less experienced environmental professionals.
White Card.
Current driver's licence.
Cert II Erosion and Sediment Control / Green Card, or equivalent experience, highly regarded.
ISCA Sustainability Accreditation desirable.
