L Arthur is one of Melbourne's oldest transport companies, operating continuously for more than 125 years. A fourth-generation family business, L Arthur operates from Footscray near the Port of Melbourne, with additional sites in Laverton, Brooklyn and Dandenong. Services include container cartage, warehousing, Biosecurity services and heavy machinery relocation.
The Biosecurity / Quarantine Division is a key part of the business, conducting 14.4 & Rural Tailgates, carrying out quarantine services as per the direction requirements of DAFF and other government bodies, quarantine unpacks and loadouts for distribution. Due to continued growth in wharf volumes, we are seeking a Washbay Worker to carry out the day-to-day tasks and activities of the Quarantine / Washbay operation.
About the role
The Washbay Worker is responsible for the safe, thorough and efficient cleaning of machinery, equipment, vehicles and associated items entering and leaving the washbay. The role requires a solid understanding of biosecurity awareness, workplace health and safety requirements, correct cleaning procedures and the prevention of contamination and the spread of pests, soil, plant material and other biosecurity risks.
Key responsibilities
Operate high-pressure washing and cleaning equipment safely and effectively.
Wash and clean machinery, vehicles, trailers, containers, tools and other equipment.
Ensure machinery and equipment are cleaned to the required washbay and biosecurity standards.
Follow established washbay procedures and cleaning checklists.
Conduct visual inspections before and after washing to ensure cleaning requirements have been met.
Correctly manage wash-water,



waste material and debris in accordance with environmental and workplace requirements.
Follow all workplace Work Health and Safety (WHS) procedures, including appropriate use of PPE.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, drivers, machinery operators and other personnel.
Perform general washbay duties and other reasonable tasks as directed.
Safety Requirements
Wear required PPE, including safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection and protective clothing as required.
Safely operate pressure washers, hoses and other washbay equipment.
Maintain a safe work area at all times.
About you
Previous experience in a washbay, cleaning, machinery, transport, agricultural or similar environment is desirable.
Knowledge or awareness of biosecurity requirements - desirable - training provided
Experience operating high-pressure cleaning equipment is advantageous.
Good attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high cleaning standards.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Good communication and organisational skills.
Physically capable of performing repetitive cleaning and manual handling tasks.
Reliable, punctual and safety-conscious.

Maintain a high standard of machinery and equipment cleanliness.
Follow biosecurity and WHS procedures at all times.
Correctly use and maintain washbay equipment.
