The role
You will provide holistic, culturally safe general practice to Aboriginal patients and families across all ages. The caseload covers chronic disease, women's and men's health, child and maternal health, sexual health, mental health and preventive care.
Hours are 8.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, with lunch from 1pm to 2pm. The day starts with a short all-staff meeting, followed by time set aside to review results. Appointments are 30 minutes, and most patients have observations taken by a nurse or Aboriginal Health Practitioner before they see you.
Walk-ins are triaged by the clinical team and kept to a single issue, so the pace is steady and well supported.
At the outreach clinic you will be the sole GP on site, so confidence working independently in a remote setting is important. At the main clinic you will work alongside the permanent GP team, with a weekly clinical meeting to discuss complex cases and hand over.
Key responsibilities
Consult across the full spectrum of general practice, including triaged walk-in patients
Complete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health assessments (MBS 715) with support from the nurse and AHW team, and follow through on resulting referrals
Develop GP chronic condition management plans and manage diabetes, cardiovascular, renal, respiratory and liver conditions
Refer eligible patients into the Integrated Team Care program for help with specialist costs, travel and equipment
Provide antenatal, postnatal, child health and immunisation care alongside the midwife and child and family health nurse
Deliver sexual health, mental health and AOD care, including GP Mental Health Treatment Plans, working with the in-house SEWB team
Order and review pathology, imaging and in-clinic tests such as ECGs, Holter and 24 hour BP monitoring, spirometry and urea breath testing
Check and action results, including those left by previous locums, and manage recalls through the clinic's recall system
Refer to visiting and regional specialists, and hand over to the local hospital emergency department when patients need a higher level of care
Complete Medicare claiming at the end of each consult or day
Support broader programs when asked, which may include the Wellness Centre, outlying clinics, schools, home visits and community health events
About the service
Our client is a well established Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. It is RACGP accredited and runs a GP clinic, dental, a Wellness Centre, children's services, social and emotional wellbeing and AOD services, and maternal and child health programs.
The main clinic has permanent GPs supported by visiting locums, clinic nurses, Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners, an on-site pharmacy dispensary and a dedicated patient transport team that takes patients to appointments across the region. A strong Wellness Centre sits alongside the clinic, with a regular calendar of bulk billed visiting specialists including cardiology, dermatology, ENT, paediatrics and endocrinology, plus in-house physio, podiatry, dietetics, OT, speech, psychology and diabetes education.
The second clinic is an outreach service where the locum GP works alongside RNs, an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse, an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, social and emotional wellbeing staff, and visiting specialists and allied health.
