Our client, a major government agency responsible for delivering essential digital services to millions of Australians, is seeking a
Senior Infrastructure Engineer
to join their Telecommunications and Network Engineering Branch. This role is integral to the management and optimisation of the agency's enterprise application delivery platforms, specifically focusing on F5 BIG-IP technologies.
The successful candidate will operate as the senior technical specialist within the Data Centre Network team, responsible for the engineering, lifecycle management, and operational support of the agency's F5 BIG-IP platforms including Local Traffic Manager (LTM), DNS/GTM, and Access Policy Manager (APM). This position supports the secure, resilient, and highly available operation of critical government services.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the administration, optimisation, and operational support of enterprise F5 BIG-IP platforms ensuring high availability and security.
Provide expert technical advice on application delivery, load balancing, traffic management, SSL/TLS, authentication services, and network security.
Design, configure, and maintain F5 environments including virtual servers, pools, monitors, policies, iRules, SSL certificates, and security controls.
Conduct advanced troubleshooting involving packet analysis, traffic flow validation, and root cause investigation across multiple technology layers.
Drive platform lifecycle management activities such as software upgrades, hardware refresh, vulnerability remediation, and cyber security enhancements.
Contribute to data centre network design, disaster recovery planning, business continuity initiatives, and change implementation.
Collaborate closely with application, security, infrastructure, and project teams as well as vendors and managed service providers to deliver technical outcomes.
Develop and maintain high-quality technical documentation, operational procedures, and knowledge sharing to support APS staff capability development.
Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
Expert-level experience with F5 BIG-IP platforms (LTM, DNS/GTM, APM) in large, complex enterprise or government environments.
Robust technical troubleshooting skills including packet captures, SSL/TLS analysis, and multi-layer diagnostics.
Demonstrated ability to lead platform upgrades, vulnerability management, and infrastructure lifecycle processes.
Robust knowledge of data centre networking including routing, switching, VLANs, firewall integration, and secure network design.
Advanced UNIX/Linux command-line skills for system diagnostics and network analysis.
Strong understanding of cyber security principles and secure platform management.
Experience with automation or scripting tools such as Python, Terraform, or Ansible is highly regarded.
Relevant certifications such as F5 Certified Technology Specialist or Cisco CCNP are advantageous but not mandatory.
Work Environment
This role is based in Canberra with a hybrid working arrangement; initial on-site presence is required for the first six weeks. The successful candidate may need to attend Canberra data centre sites during planned maintenance and change windows. A Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance, or the ability to obtain it, is mandatory.
