SENIOR ORTHOPAEDIC REGISTRAR/PHO | FULL TIME 12 MONTH CONTRACT WITH POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION | EARLY
SENIOR ORTHOPAEDIC REGISTRAR/PHO | FULL TIME 12 MONTH CONTRACT WITH POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION | EARLY TO MID **** START
An outstanding opportunity is available for an Orthopaedic Registrar or Principal House Officer to join a high-volume, consultant-led orthopaedic service within a major public teaching hospital, offering hands-on operative exposure across trauma and elective surgery, direct consultant supervision in theatre and clinic, and the clinical breadth required to accelerate your orthopaedic career. This role is ideally suited to motivated, capable doctors, including overseas-trained clinicians seeking a first Australian orthopaedic appointment, who want real responsibility, structured progression, and the chance to develop technical skill, judgement, and confidence within a supportive, high-performing team.
FAST FACTS
High-volume orthopaedic service with significant trauma and elective surgery exposure
Broad subspecialty mix including arthroplasty, sports, spine, hand, foot and ankle, shoulder and elbow surgery
Strong consultant supervision in theatre and clinic, with a clear focus on training and skill development
Visa sponsorship available, suitable for doctors travelling solo or with families
The Position
This role provides comprehensive exposure across elective orthopaedic surgery, trauma management, fracture clinics, outpatient services, and inpatient care, with active involvement in both operative and non-operative management. The successful applicant will work closely with Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and senior medical staff, contributing meaningfully to patient care while progressively developing technical, clinical, and decision-making skills.
The position requires the ability to take primary responsibility for day-to-day patient management across ward, clinic, and theatre settings within a consultant-led service. Registrars and PHOs will be expected to assess patients, formulate management plans, progress care efficiently, and participate confidently in theatre lists and clinics, with senior medical staff readily available for guidance, review, and escalation when required.
Additional responsibilities include participation in teaching, audit, morbidity and mortality meetings, and departmental research activities. The role is offered on a fixed-term, full-time basis (12 months with potential for extension) and is ideally suited to doctors seeking to strengthen operative exposure and orthopaedic capability within a supportive and well-supervised training environment.
The Department
The Orthopaedic Department is a well-resourced, consultant-led service with a strong emphasis on teamwork, education, and high-quality patient care. The team includes a Clinical Director, multiple Staff Specialists with diverse subspecialty interests, an AOA SET trainee, registrars, principal house officers,

resident medical officers, interns, and an Orthogeriatrician supporting complex inpatient care.
The department manages a high volume of trauma and elective orthopaedic cases, with subspecialty exposure spanning upper and lower limb arthroplasty, sports injuries, spine, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, shoulder and elbow surgery. Care is delivered across dedicated surgical wards, up-to-date operating theatres, outpatient and fracture clinics, and supported by regional telehealth services.
The department is recognised for its structured, consultant-led training environment, clear supervision pathways, and commitment to developing registrars and PHOs through progressive clinical responsibility, making it an excellent setting for overseas-trained doctors transitioning into the Australian system, as well as for locally based clinicians seeking meaningful operative experience and career progression within Orthopaedics.
The Hospital
This is a large regional referral hospital with approximately 300 inpatient beds, delivering secondary and tertiary-level care to a wide geographic catchment. It functions as the primary referral centre for surrounding facilities and manages a high volume of complex medical and surgical cases.
The hospital provides a comprehensive range of specialist services, including:
Intensive Care
General Medicine and subspecialties
Cardiology
Geriatric Medicine
Haematology and Medical Oncology
Palliative Care
Renal Medicine
Paediatrics
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
General Surgery
Orthopaedics
ENT
Psychiatry and Mental Health Services
Specialist outreach and visiting services from tertiary centres further enhance local service capability and exposure to advanced care pathways.
The hospital is a recognised teaching hospital, actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, with formal affiliations to external universities and medical schools. Medical staff work in an environment that values supervision, education, and long-term career progression.
What makes this hospital particularly attractive is the combination of high-acuity clinical exposure, strong senior support, and genuine teaching culture, without the fragmentation often seen in larger metropolitan centres. Doctors here gain hands-on experience, autonomy appropriate to level, and meaningful involvement in patient care, while still working within a well-resourced and supervised environment.
The Location

This role is based in a well-connected regional centre that combines city-level convenience with an exceptional quality of life. The region is a major service hub, offering strong infrastructure, modern amenities, and a local regional airport with regular commercial flights, providing straightforward access to capital cities and interstate travel.
Road and air connectivity make commuting, professional travel, and visiting family and friends simple and practical, while day-to-day living benefits from shorter travel times, less congestion, and a more relaxed pace of life than metropolitan centres.
Lifestyle
Commute times measured in minutes, not hours
Significantly more affordable housing than capital cities
A welcoming, community-oriented environment ideal for individuals, couples, and families
Quality schooling options across public and private sectors
Easy access to outdoor activities including walking trails, waterways, and open spaces
Warm climate encouraging an active, outdoor lifestyle year-round
Cafés, dining, sporting clubs, and cultural events without big-city crowds
This is an opportunity to reset how work and life fit together. You can build a strong, respected career within a major hospital while enjoying the time, space, and lifestyle that metropolitan roles increasingly fail to offer. For doctors who want professional satisfaction without personal compromise, this role delivers a balance that genuinely hard to ignore.
Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) eligible for registration as a Medical Practitioner in Australia
Prior clinical exposure in Orthopaedics or surgical services, including involvement in trauma and/or elective orthopaedic care
A track record of managing patients across inpatient, outpatient, and peri-operative settings, with the judgement required to take primary responsibility for care within a consultant-led service
Practical experience contributing in theatre, fracture clinics, outpatient clinics, and ward-based care, with a clear understanding of when senior review or escalation is required
Proven capacity to practise with an appropriate level of independence within agreed scope, supported by readily available senior specialist input
Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including providing day-to-day guidance and support to more junior medical staff
Ongoing commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement activities, audit, and professional development
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
