Company Description
The ARC Research Hub in the Internet of Things for Water (ARC IoT Water Hub) positions Australia as a global leader in digital water technologies and smart water management systems. Backed by an $11.8 million investment from the Australian Research Council, the Hub is led by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in collaboration with six universities and 42 industry partners. The Hub focuses on smart water sensors, real-time water quality monitoring, predictive analytics, digital twin technologies, and sustainable water solutions for water supply, wastewater, and stormwater systems. Partners include water utilities, smart city initiatives, technology developers, telecommunications providers, and government agencies in Australia and internationally. Team members work at the intersection of advanced research and real-world implementation to transform how water resources are monitored and managed.
Role Description
The PhD – Low-cost Nutrient Sensing role is a full-time, on‐site position based in Brisbane City, QLD. The candidate will design, develop, and validate low-cost nutrient sensing technologies for water quality monitoring, with a focus on integrating sensors into IoT-enabled systems. Day‐to‐day activities include planning and conducting laboratory experiments, performing field trials in real-world water environments, and analyzing data to improve sensor performance and reliability. The role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary researchers and industry partners, preparing publications and reports, presenting findings at meetings and conferences,
and contributing to prototype development and deployment. The candidate will also engage in regular progress reviews, support grant and project documentation, and participate in Hub‐wide activities to advance digital water innovation.
Qualifications
Strong foundation in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, water science, or a closely related discipline, with eligibility for or enrollment in a relevant PhD program.
Experience in sensor development and analytical techniques, including water quality measurement, nutrient analysis, and calibration and validation of sensing devices.
Skills in data analysis and modeling, such as statistical analysis, signal processing, and basic familiarity with predictive or computational methods for interpreting sensor outputs.
Understanding of IoT and digital water technologies, including sensor networks, real‐time monitoring systems, and integration of devices with data platforms.
Proficiency in scientific writing and communication, including preparing research papers, technical reports, and presentations for academic and industry audiences.
Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, engage with industry partners, and manage research activities independently with solid organizational skills.
Prior experience in fieldwork or pilot studies in water utilities, environmental monitoring, or smart city projects is highly beneficial.
