City Of Launceston
Brisbane
Warning: This job may significantly improve your lifestyle!
LOCATION: Launceston , Tasmania
Before we talk about the role, we'd like to address a few rumours. Yes, the commute really can be about 10 minutes. Yes, people still find parking close to work. And yes, we did look at the traditional working week and think 'nah, that's a bit much'.
So when you join, you get to choose between a compressed four-day week and a nine-day fortnight. Same hours, fewer days. Which means a lot more long weekends. You're welcome.
Now, let's talk about Launceston (or Launnie, as we locals call it).
Or, as many people discover after moving here, the place they should have found years ago. See, somewhere along the way, Australia got itself into a strange arrangement. People started accepting that to have a good career, you needed to sacrifice lifestyle. That sitting in traffic for two hours a day was normal. That paying a small fortune for a modest house was normal. That spending most of your waking hours commuting to a job so you could afford the place you slept between commutes was somehow a sensible arrangement.
We respectfully disagree.
In Launceston, we're trying something radical. We're having both. Career and lifestyle. Opportunity and more space for your money. Ambition and adventure. The crazy thing is, it actually works.
A typical day might include shaping the future of one of Australia's most progressive regional cities, grabbing lunch by the Tamar River, knocking off at a reasonable hour and deciding whether you're going mountain biking, bushwalking, fishing, kayaking, exploring a winery, heading to the beach, catching up with friends or simply putting your feet up on the veranda.
The hardest part is choosing. And even that's easier because most of it is close. Ridiculously close. World class mountain bike trails. Close. Waterfalls. Close. Beaches. Close. Rainforests. Close. National parks. Close. Award-winning food and wine. Dangerously close.
The sort of places people spend thousands of dollars visiting on holiday are, well, just down the road.
Speaking of holidays, summer here is showing off. The sun is up before 6am and hangs around until nearly 9pm, seemingly determined to get maximum value from the place. Frankly, we understand the feeling.
Then there are the homes. Character homes. Heritage homes. Homes with backyards. Space. Verandas. Trees. Gardens. Neighbours. The kind that people photograph while visiting and say: "Imagine living here." Imagine no longer. You can. We do.
And while we're talking perks, here's another one. The City of Launceston isn't your typical council. We're bold. We're ambitious. We're progressive. We're building stuff. Big stuff. Interesting stuff. City-shaping stuff. We're investing in infrastructure, supporting growth, driving major projects and helping create a future that's every bit as exciting as our past. We also offer an employee benefits program with discounts on everyday spending, because the cost of living is real and we'd rather help with it.
We don't do boring. We don't do "good enough." And we're definitely not interested in standing still.
Which brings us to the job. (We know, we had to mention it eventually.)
As our
Senior Development Engineer
, you'll help shape how Launceston grows. You'll work on development and infrastructure projects that will influence the future of the city, work with industry professionals to solve complex challenges and help deliver outcomes that genuinely matter.
You'll also enjoy a few extras along the way. And you'll get to do it in a workplace full of people who genuinely love where they live, and who'll make you feel at home fast.
Fair warning though. We're not for everyone. If you love spending hours in traffic, mortgages that need their own mortgage, or planning a weekend away six months in advance just to find a patch of nature, we might not be your thing. We're not boring. We're busy living.
And between adventures, we happen to be looking for a Senior Development Engineer.
We welcome applications from everyone. If you need any adjustments to apply or take part in the process, just let us know.
Keyresponsibilities of this position include:
Giving senior engineering advice at pre-lodgement, so applicants and consultants understand infrastructure, stormwater, traffic and asset requirements early
Assessing complex development, subdivision, building and plumbing applications and setting clear, defensible engineering conditions within statutory timeframes
Reviewing engineering designs for infrastructure to be vested in Council,
and overseeing construction compliance through audit and final inspections
Finalising subdivisions and strata developments, including bonds, financial securities, easements, title matters and asset handover
Coordinating specialist input from across Council and escalating high-risk or policy-sensitive matters to senior leaders
Contributing to technical guidance and continuous improvement in engineering standards and assessment practice
About You
We are looking for someone who demonstrates, through behaviour, an alignment and an understanding of Our Values and has the following qualifications, skills and experience:
A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, municipal engineering or another directly relevant engineering discipline, with post-qualification experience in civil infrastructure, development engineering, municipal engineering or a closely related field
