Nelson Locksmiths | Adelaide, South Australia
Full time Position | On-the-Job Training Provided
Are you mechanically minded, experienced with tools and looking for a new career direction?
Nelson Locksmiths is seeking a motivated and reliable Adult Trainee Locksmith to join our growing team.
This opportunity is designed for someone who already has practical, hands-on experience in a trade, mechanical or technical setting and is looking to apply those skills to a new career in locksmithing.
You don't need to have worked as a locksmith before — but you do need to know your way around tools.
We're looking for someone with practical experience, strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand how things work, identify problems and find solutions.
You'll receive structured, hands-on training from experienced locksmiths while developing the skills required to work within the locksmith and security industry.
About the Role
Working alongside our experienced team, you'll learn a variety of locksmithing skills, including:
- Installation, servicing and repair of locks and door hardware
- Assembly, disassembly and repair of mechanical locking systems
- Key cutting, rekeying and lock servicing
- Commercial and residential locksmithing
- Understanding and working with restricted master key systems
- Fault finding, diagnostics and mechanical problem solving
- Working with specialised locksmithing tools and equipment
- Introduction to electronic locking and access control systems
- Safe work practices and industry security requirements
As your skills and confidence develop, you'll be given greater responsibility and opportunities to expand your technical knowledge.
Who We're Looking For
Previous locksmithing experience is not required. However, practical experience using hand tools and working in a trade, mechanical or technical environment is essential.
You may have experience in:
- Automotive or mechanical work
- Carpentry, joinery or cabinetmaking
- Metal fabrication or engineering
- Building maintenance or construction trades
- Machinery servicing or technical assembly
- Other hands-on trades requiring mechanical aptitude and precision
We're particularly interested in applicants who:
- Are mechanically minded and enjoy understanding how things work
- Are confident using hand tools, power tools and measuring equipment
- Have strong practical problem-solving skills
- Can accurately measure, calculate and follow technical instructions
- Demonstrate attention to detail and take pride in their workmanship
- Are reliable, punctual and willing to learn
- Can follow instructions and work independently as their skills develop
- Have good communication and customer service skills
- Are comfortable using computers and learning new technology
- Are looking for a stable, long-term career
This is not an entry-level opportunity for someone with no practical tool experience. We are looking for someone who already has a foundation of hands-on skills that can be developed through locksmith-specific training.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a current driver's licence
- Have previous hands-on experience with tools in a trade, mechanical or technical environment
- Be eligible to obtain and maintain a National Police Check
- Be eligible to obtain and maintain a Working with Children Check
- Be eligible to obtain and maintain relevant South Australian police and security clearances, including SAPOL requirements applicable to the role
- Be willing to undertake ongoing training and follow industry security and confidentiality requirements
You do not need to hold all the required clearances when applying.
However, successful applicants must be willing and eligible to obtain them as required.
What We Offer
- Full-time employment with an established South Australian business
- Competitive remuneration based on existing skills and experience
- Structured on-the-job training with experienced locksmiths
- Tool allowance
- Company uniform
- Exposure to a diverse range of commercial and residential locksmithing work
- A supportive team environment
