The Organisation
Most people in Brisbane know this organisation’s name and what it stands for. It’s a long-established, values-led organisation that has served the community for generations across aged care and community services. Right now it’s also one of the more ambitious finance environments on the northside.
A new finance leadership team has spent the last year rebuilding how finance works. The old model had generalists doing everything. It has been replaced with clear lanes: a financial accounting team looks after compliance and reporting, and an FP&A; team partners with the business. The aim is for finance to be the team operators call before they make a decision, not the one that sends them a spreadsheet afterwards.
This isn’t month-end processing with a business partnering title. The core statutory and technical accounting sits with a separate team, so most of your time goes into understanding the numbers and helping the business act on them. The previous incumbent’s processes are fully documented, so you’ll start with a clean handover.
The Role
You’ll be the Management Accountant for one of the organisation’s largest divisions. It covers retirement living and a range of aged care services. You’ll work closely with your Lead Business Partner and the managers running services on the ground.
To be explicit about what this role is: it isn’t month-end processing with a business partnering title. Depreciation, leases and statutory work sit with a separate team. Your time goes into understanding the numbers and helping the business act on them. The previous incumbent’s processes are fully documented,
so you’ll start with a clean handover rather than a mess to untangle.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Monthly performance reporting, including variance analysis, KPIs, trend analysis and commentary that operators can act on
- Budgets, rolling forecasts and financial modelling for your division
- Workforce cost analysis, which is the biggest lever in any care business
- Scenario modelling and cost-benefit analysis to support business planning and investment decisions
- Making sure grants, client funding and service lines are coded correctly, and supporting revenue recognition and claims validation
- Monitoring unclaimed revenue and billing exceptions, so money isn’t left on the table
- Month-end, accruals and minor asset coding for your division
- Lifting financial literacy across the business so managers understand and own their numbers
- Improving processes, systems and SOPs, including working with the data team to automate manual reporting
About You
You’re a management accountant with a personality. You read a P&L; and immediately want to know why a number moved, and you can explain the answer to a site manager or a CEO in plain English. You don’t wait to be told what to improve.
Attitude, ambition and initiative matter most here. You’ll need a solid accounting foundation,
but the team will train you in the parts of the role you haven’t done before. They want a go-getter who challenges the status quo, makes things better and leaves the role in better shape than they found it.
Your Experience
- 3 to 4+ years in management accounting. A mix of business services and commerce is welcome, but commercial experience is key.
- CA or CPA, completed or in progress
- Confidence presenting numbers to non-finance leaders and people across the business
- Advanced Excel and experience with ERP and reporting tools. TechnologyOne or Power BI is a bonus.
- Curiosity and a real drive to improve how things are done
- Aged care, government-funded or not-for-profit experience is a bonus, not a requirement
What’s on Offer
- $110,000 + super, plus not-for-profit salary packaging worth roughly $10,000 a year. Starting now can mean extra packaging value across two FBT years.
- A rostered day off every fortnight, if you want it
- Flexible start and finish times, with 3 days in the office and 2 from home
- Free on-site parking (first in, best dressed)
- A real development path, with mentoring from a senior business partner and a leadership team invested in building capability
- A down-to-earth team in an organisation where people stay for years, which makes it an excellent place to build your business partnering skills
- Work where better financial decisions lead to better care for real people
