As an Information Technology Specialist, you’ll keep the Army connected and communicating effectively by operating and maintaining advanced networks using the latest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment. This is no ordinary IT role. You’ll manage sophisticated military software and hardware and play an key role in determining the success of military operations.
What you'll do
Working alongside specialists in various information and communications systems trades, you’ll provide technical support to establish and monitor communications networks that allow command and control of deployed forces at home and overseas. You’ll assist in the installation and configuration of operating systems, as well as keeping the Army’s cyber network secure. You’ll also maintain IT equipment, administer networks and provide support to missions.
- installing and configuring computer systems
- preparing and deploying communications equipment in support of exercises and operations
- providing technical support on base and out in the field
- identifying and remediating software and hardware issues, plus analysing software performance
- ensuring cyber and network security is maintained and enforced
- establishing and continuing to monitor communications networks that allow command and control of deployed forces.

Opportunities for progression and upskilling continue throughout your career. As you progress, the Army will provide you with development opportunities to assist you with your increasing leadership responsibility,
as well as further education and specialised training to strengthen your skillset. This will help you to command and run a highly skilled team of soldiers and the employment of their equipment.
Where you'll work
Following training, you could be employed in all Army signal tactical units and strategic units that operate throughout Australia. Most positions are located in Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne, Sydney and Townsville. You may also have opportunities to deploy overseas on operations during your career.

Age
You can apply for a role in the ADF from 16.5 years of age and must be at least 17 to join. The maximum age to join is 56 years.
Licences
You don’t need a driver’s licence for this role but if you have one, it can’t be suspended or cancelled.
Security requirements
All ADF members require a security clearance. As an ADF member, you’ll need to obtain the appropriate level of security clearance for your role. You’ll need a collection of relevant information including background checks and/or interviews so the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) can make an informed assessment to ensure the protection of Government resources and information.
