Are you a passionate STEM educator with a background in geography, geology, environmental science or Meteorology? Are you a science practitioner with a passion for training? Do you enjoy helping others learn through practical, hands-on experiences rather than spending most of your time in a traditional classroom?

This unique chance with the Bureau of Meteorology offers the chance to combine your scientific knowledge, training expertise and curiosity in a role that directly contributes to Australia's national weather and climate services. Based in Melbourne's northern suburbs, the position provides a diverse mix of science, field-based learning and vocational training, with a significantly lower classroom teaching load than most secondary school or tertiary teaching roles. You will be training adults to effectively take weather measurements, observe the current weather, classify exposure of measuring equipment and also safely releasing weather balloons. These vocational skills will be learnt on the job. As part of a dedicated training team, you will help develop and deliver programs that prepare Bureau staff to operate and maintain critical meteorological observing systems across Australia. The successful candidate will be supported to learn new technical skills and gain exposure to a wide range of scientific and operational disciplines. The key duties of the position include:

The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

1. Complying with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct.

2. Organise, coordinate, and supervise the training and assessment of appropriate Bureau staff in taking weather observations to the standard outlined in Bureau procedures and adhering to relevant safety policies and procedures.

3. Liaise with external providers to deliver appropriate training required to Bureau staff

4. Develop and deliver online and face to face learning materials and remote training sessions using the Bureau’s Learning Management System (LMS) ensuring alignment to adult learning methodologies.

5. Consult with other areas of the Bureau to ensure training is up to date and aligns with Bureau practices.

6. Provide training and assessment advice to Bureau staff in head office and regional hubs

Eligibility

A degree or diploma of an Australian educational institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which is appropriate to the duties; OR other comparable qualifications, which are appropriate to the duties.



You don’t need to have weather observation skills, we will train you in the content, we do need you to have an applied background in science, applied training skills and a willingness to learn.
