The Role
Reporting to the Director and Northern Territory State Manager, the Assistant Director is responsible for leading and delivering of Australian Government employment and skills programs. The role provides strategic and operational leadership, manages provider performance and contracts, and builds strong place-based partnerships with employer, provider, communities and government stakeholders to improve employment and skills outcomes.
The role contributes to the department’s strategic objectives by focusing effort where it can make the greatest difference, working across boundaries, embedding Closing the Gap in delivery, and strengthening employment, skills pathways for people, employers and communities in the Northern Territory.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities of the Assistant Director may include:
- Support inclusive, culturally informed engagement that listens to First Nations people, values lived experience and contributes to Closing the Gap outcomes.
- Lead a team delivering Australian Government employment and skills programs in the Northern Territory.
- Provide direction across a range of strategic and operational priorities, working under limited direction from the Director.
- Manage employment and skills contracts, including provider performance, compliance,
assurance, quality and relationship management.
- Build and maintain robust relationships with employers, providers, government, community organisations and other stakeholders.
- Use local labour market intelligence to inform engagement activity, prioritisation and program delivery.
- Support place-based projects that connect job seekers, employers and communities with appropriate employment and skills pathways.
- Lead staff in a collaborative, flexible and psychologically safe environment that supports capability, innovation and performance.

Eligibility Please note, under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing.
This is a designated security assessed position. The successful candidate will have the ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
This selection process may be used to establish a merit pool. The pool might be accessed to fill ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies for similar roles in the Department over the next 18 months.
