North Sydney Community Centre
North Sydney
Are you a foodie, a people person, an event specialist and a lover of fresh produce and local markets?
Do you love discovering great producers, working with food makers and seeing a community come together around good food?
Do you enjoy building relationships, creating reasons for people to visit and making things happen?
Then we may have the role for you!
North Sydney Community Centre (NSCC) is looking for an enthusiastic, organised and community-minded Northside Produce Market Coordinator to take responsibility for our much-loved fortnightly market in the heart of beautiful North Sydney. These long standing markets are a crucial fundraiser supporting the community centre. This is a hands-on role combining people, food, community, market coordination, marketing and administration. You will be managing the markets to the annual budget and looking for opportunities to grow the market financially.
Our stallholders are the heart of the market
Our stallholders are the market!
Many have been coming for years, and we’re looking for someone who will get to know them, understand their businesses and build genuine relationships that keep them coming back with their quality produce.
You’ll be the main point of contact for stallholders — checking in, listening to feedback, solving problems and making sure they understand they are valued and supported.
You’ll also:
- Manage stallholder selection, applications, bookings, invoicing and communication
- Welcome and support new stallholders
- Maintain a strong and diverse mix of producers and businesses
- Promote stallholders and their stories through social media and other channels
- Identify opportunities to visit farms, kitchens, factories and businesses and build stronger relationships
- Manage concerns or disagreements calmly and professionally
- Look for ways to continually improve the stallholder experience
Create a market people want to come to
Our stallholders are at the heart of the market. Your role is to help showcase what makes them special and create the atmosphere, stories and experiences that bring people through the gates, keep them coming back, and help our stallholders thrive.
That might be a new producer, seasonal produce, a special foodie event, live music, a seasonal celebration, a great stallholder story — or simply the promise of a wonderful morning buying fresh food and being part of the local community.
You’ll help bring these stories and opportunities to life by:
- Developing market promotions, themes and special events
- Creating engaging Facebook and Instagram content
- Telling the stories of our farmers, growers and producers
- Highlighting what’s new, what’s in season and what’s happening at the market
- Contributing to website and e-newsletter content
- Coordinating posters, flyers, banners and other promotional materials
- Identifying local partnerships and promotional opportunities
- Working closely with North Sydney Council and our Marketing Coordinator
Keep the market running brilliantly
You’ll also be responsible for the practical side of making the market happen every fortnight. You’ll:
- Coordinate and manage your casual staff and volunteers on market day
- Prepare market maps, signage and the NSCC information stall
- Coordinate site set-up and other market-day requirements
- Ensure stallholders meet relevant quality, food and safety requirements
- Liaise with North Sydney Council where required
- Conduct routine WHS checks and follow up hazards
- Respond confidently to issues, complaints or unexpected situations
- Maintain the market database and records
- Prepare a monthly report for the Management Committee
- Monitor stall bookings, revenue, payments and market expenses
- Look for opportunities to improve the market’s financial sustainability
Be part of the NSCC team
North Sydney Community Centre is a vibrant not‑for‑profit, community‑driven and independently managed organisation offering a diverse range of services to the local community: classes, educational and creative workshops, events, venue hire, playgroup for little ones, After School Care services for families, the fresh produce food markets and community programs in the heart of North Sydney.
As a member of the North Sydney Community Centre leadership team, in addition to responsibility for the financial success of the FPM, you’ll also contribute to the broader life of the Centre — supporting general office administration, assisting with enrolment days and Centre-wide events,
and pitching in across the organisation when needed. We value people who are willing to look beyond their own area, work collaboratively and contribute to making NSCC a welcoming and successful community organisation.
About you
You might have experience in markets, events, hospitality, food, community, customer service, administration, marketing or small business.
What matters most is that you’re the right person.
You’ll be someone who:
- Loves people and enjoys building genuine relationships
- Is highly organised and attentive to detail
- Knows and has experience of the ins and outs of running a successful event
- Loves food and fresh produce and has a genuine interest in local producers
- Thinks like a customer and naturally asks, “Why would people come?”
- Communicates brilliantly and can manage both friendly and difficult conversations
- Thinks on your feet and stays calm when things don’t go to plan
- Takes initiative and doesn’t need to be told what to do
- Understands social media and enjoys creating engaging content
- Is hands-on and comfortable being visible, deeply involved and actively engaged on market day
Graphic design skills, particularly Adobe InDesign, would be an advantage.
