Financial Accountant in State Government temp contract role

Financial Accountant (Contract) 3-Month ContractAre you an experienced Financial Accountant with a strong background in balance sheet reconciliations, financial controls, and process improvement? We are seeking a highly capable accounting professional to join a large and complex organisation on an initial 3-month contract to lead a comprehensive balance sheet review project while building capability within the finance team.This is an opportunity to make an immediate impact by strengthening financial governance, improving reconciliation processes, and ensuring balance sheet integrity ahead of future reporting and audit requirements.Your current roleReporting to the Finance Manager, you will take ownership of a detailed review and reconciliation of approximately 14 balance sheet accounts, ensuring all balances are accurate, appropriately supported, and compliant with accounting standards and internal policies.Key responsibilities include:

- Performing end-to-end reconciliations across key balance sheet accounts, including receivables, payables, accruals, provisions, prepayments, fixed assets, liabilities, and other general ledger accounts.
- Reviewing historical reconciliations and identifying aged or outstanding reconciling items.
- Investigating discrepancies and resolving unreconciled balances with appropriate supporting documentation.
- Preparing comprehensive reconciliation workpapers and audit-ready supporting evidence.
- Identifying required accounting adjustments and assisting with journal preparation where necessary.
- Supporting month-end financial reporting activities.
- Ensuring balance sheet accounts are fully supported and audit compliant.
- Recommending and implementing improvements to reconciliation processes, controls,



and documentation standards.

In addition, you will play a key role in developing internal capability by:

- Training and mentoring finance team members on reconciliation methodologies and best practice.
- Developing reconciliation templates, procedures, and guidance materials.
- Reviewing the work of finance staff and providing technical coaching and support.
- Establishing sustainable processes to ensure reconciliations can be maintained internally.
- Facilitating knowledge transfer and documenting procedures to strengthen long-term capability within the team.

What you'll need to succeedTo be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

- CA, CPA or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
- Significant experience in financial accounting and general ledger management.
- Proven expertise completing complex balance sheet reconciliations within large organisations.
- Strong understanding of accounting standards, financial controls, and audit requirements.
- Experience mentoring, coaching, and developing finance professionals.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- The ability to work independently and deliver outcomes within tight timeframes.
