About the Organisation
Community Housing Industry Association Queensland (CHIA Queensland) is the independent peak body representing community housing organisations across the state. Its members collectively manage more than 16,000 homes valued at over $3 billion, providing safe, secure and affordable housing for Queenslanders.
CHIA Queensland exists to lead and enable a diverse and dynamic community housing industry, working with its members, government and sector partners to strengthen capability, influence policy and improve housing outcomes across Queensland. With increased funding, growing membership and an expanding program of work, the organisation is entering an exciting stage of its development.
Purpose and collaboration sit at the heart of CHIA Queensland's culture. It is a small, connected organisation where people work closely with the CEO, Board, members and partners and have the opportunity to make a visible contribution. Its work is grounded in equity, collaboration, integrity and innovation, with a strong focus on bringing people together to achieve practical outcomes for communities.
CHIA Queensland's broader purpose is to support a diverse and dynamic community housing industry that can better meet housing needs and create greater life opportunities for Queenslanders.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Senior Policy Advisor will play an influential role in shaping CHIA Queensland's policy agenda and advancing the interests of the community housing sector at a time of significant focus on housing across the state.
This is a role with genuine scope to make your mark. Building on foundations already established, you will have the autonomy to shape the policy function, lead a substantial program of work and work directly with government,
members and sector partners to turn policy thinking into practical outcomes.
Key areas of focus will include:
- Lead policy development and analysis, developing evidence-based positions, submissions and advice across housing, planning, legislative and regulatory matters.
- Drive priority policy initiatives, including CHIA Queensland's Sustainable Growth Blueprint and strategic work relating to affordable and community housing.
- Influence government and sector outcomes, engaging with senior government stakeholders, member CEOs, local government, peak bodies and industry partners.
- Translate policy into practical impact, identifying what emerging reforms mean for members and developing clear recommendations on how CHIA Queensland and the sector should respond.
- Shape and strengthen the policy function, establishing effective frameworks and ways of working while bringing your own ideas and approach to a developing organisation.
With direct access to the CEO and exposure to the Board and senior external stakeholders, this is an opportunity to have genuine ownership and visibility while contributing to policy outcomes that can make a tangible difference to housing across Queensland.
About You
You will be an accomplished policy professional with the ability to apply positive judgment and critical thinking to work through complex issues and what they mean in practice.
Your background may be in government,
local government, a peak body, industry association, housing, planning, social policy or another adjacent policy environment. Direct community housing experience would be valuable, but it is not essential. More important is your ability to understand government processes, interpret policy and legislation, develop well-considered positions and translate complex information into practical advice.
You will bring strong writing, research and analytical capability, combined with the confidence and credibility to engage senior stakeholders. You can move beyond identifying what has changed to articulate why it matters, what the implications are and what should happen next.
You will also be comfortable working in a small and evolving organisation. Rather than relying on established structures and processes, you will enjoy the opportunity to create them, bring your own ideas and take ownership of your work. You are proactive, collaborative and motivated by the opportunity to apply your expertise to work with a clear social purpose.
For an ambitious policy professional looking for greater autonomy, exposure and the opportunity to influence an important policy agenda, this is a rare opportunity to make a tangible contribution to the future of community housing in Queensland.
