About the role

Kate Chaney MP, the Independent Federal Member for Curtin, is seeking a Media & Communications Adviser to join her dynamic, close-knit team in doing politics differently. This is an exciting opportunity for a person with media experience to provide day-to-day and strategic media advice to the Member. The successful candidate will need to build relationships with media both locally in Curtin and with the press gallery in Canberra.
This role is responsible for seeking media opportunities, responding promptly to media enquiries, and preparing the Member for media appearances. It requires strong, clear communication abilities with excellent written skills.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for the communication strategy with the Digital Media Adviser and Chief of Staff, and manage all printed communications for the Member.
This role is based in the Member's electorate office in Floreat, Western Australia and requires travel to Canberra for parliamentary sitting weeks (approx. 18 each year).

Key responsibilities
Traditional media
- Provide timely strategic media advice to the Member and team regarding issues of national and local importance and issues relevant to the Member's platform.
- Daily monitoring of national and local media.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key media within the Canberra press gallery, the national media,
the Perth metropolitan media and local media outlets within the electorate.
- Identify, develop and deliver media opportunities at Parliament and within the electorate.
- Respond to media enquiries in a timely and qualified manner and escalate where required.
- Draft media releases and statements in conjunction with the Member and other staff.
- Prepare the Member for media events.
Supporting Communications
- Develop, manage and implement a multi-platform communications strategy for traditional media and written communications in conjunction with the Member, Digital Media Adviser and Chief of Staff.
- Develop, manage and provide content for printed communications, including quarterly newsletters, e-newsletters and advertisements.
- Ensure consistent messaging across all communications platforms.
- Work closely with the Digital Media Adviser to build a database of content for use across platforms.
Supporting Events
- Liaise with community groups, business groups and constituents for media opportunities for the Member.
- Support the Member at events, including taking photographs, interacting with constituents, and producing event content for communications platforms.

- Experience in journalism, communications and politics.
- Experienced and skilled with content creation applications.
- Aligned with the Member's purpose and values.
- Strong, clear communication abilities with excellent written skills.
- Ability to work in a high-pressure environment.

A total remuneration package of $151, 743 will be paid, which includes:
- a salary of $102, 681 per annum;
- an allowance of $28, 812 in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work; and
- employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% is paid on the total salary ($131, 493 being salary plus allowance) of $20, 250.
This role has a probationary period of 3 months and may be subject to extension.
