About the role

VMIA is the Victorian Government's insurer and risk adviser, covering the people, places and projects that help Victorians thrive. Our purpose is to build a confident, resilient Victoria through world-leading harm prevention and recovery.

As our Data Platform Engineer, you'll help build the Snowflake data warehouse that supports VMIA's data and digital initiatives. You'll write clean, maintainable code, develop clear documentation and contribute to the deployment of secure, reliable data infrastructure.

This 9-month contract focuses on building the warehouse, including its database resources, access controls and deployment processes.

Working within the Data and Analytics team in the Business Performance Division, you'll gain hands-on experience in software engineering, data governance and enterprise data platforms, with guidance from experienced data professionals.

Key responsibilities

- Help create Snowflake databases, schemas, warehouses, tables and stored procedures using Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Pulumi or Terraform.

- Write Python and SQL to support deployment scripts,

stored procedures and data ingestion pipelines.

- Assist data engineers with designing and implementing repeatable deployment patterns across development, test and production environments.

- Contribute to configuration-driven platform definitions using YAML and JSON.

- Implement role-based access controls, including role hierarchies, permissions and access policies aligned with security standards.

- Configure Snowflake infrastructure, including computing resources, resource monitors, network policies and integrations, to support scalability and cost control.

- Help establish consistent environment configurations and identify and resolve access misconfigurations under senior guidance.

- Write unit, module and integration tests to validate infrastructure changes.

- Support and troubleshoot continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, such as GitHub Actions, to validate, test and deploy platform changes.

- Use Git and GitHub branching, code review and pull request practices.

- Develop clear documentation to support the warehouse build and deployment.

- Identify and escalate risks or issues, follow relevant policies and controls, and report incidents.

- Contribute to a safe, respectful workplace, apply feedback and actively participate in your professional development.

Who you work with

You'll report to the Head of Data and Analytics and work closely with the Data and Analytics team.

Collaborating with data engineers and experienced data professionals, you'll contribute to the warehouse build, learn established engineering practices and develop your technical skills through mentoring, feedback and practical experience.

What we are looking for

You're curious about how systems work and keen to develop your skills in data platform engineering. You bring an analytical approach, attention to detail and a willingness to learn.

You'll have:

- Exposure to relational databases and SQL through university study, projects, internships or personal learning.

- Exposure to Python, including data structures, scripting and working with structured data formats such as JSON and YAML.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to break down unclear problems into manageable questions.

- Strong written communication skills and attention to detail, particularly when documenting technical work.

- Curiosity about how systems and processes fit together.

- Experience through internships, projects or work in software engineering, software development, data engineering or data modelling.

- Familiarity with software engineering concepts such as automated testing, code reviews and CI/CD.

- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git and collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence.

- Familiarity with APIs and common data formats, including JSON, CSV and XML.

- A collaborative approach, openness to feedback and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Qualifications

A tertiary qualification in a technical or quantitative discipline, such as computer science, software engineering, information systems or actuarial studies, would be advantageous.
