Geraldton Cemetery Board is seeking a reliable and practical Grounds Keeper / Cemetery Operator to join our operations team.

This varied role combines grounds and garden maintenance with burial preparation, cremation duties and chapel service support. You will help keep the cemetery protected and well presented while supporting respectful funeral services for our community.

About the role

Working under the direction of the operations team, your duties will include:

Cremations and chapel services
Assist with routine cremations under supervision.
Receive attended and non-attended funerals.
Prepare, set up and clean the chapel before and after services.
Attend and monitor funeral proceedings, including operating CCTV, PA and sound systems, and webcasting equipment.
Clean and maintain public amenities.

Burial operations
Identify and check grave locations for accuracy.
Prepare graves using hand tools, machinery and shoring systems in accordance with GCB procedures.
Cover excavated soil and position supports and matting to maintain public safety.
Maintain clear, safe access for funeral corteges.
Backfill graves following services and leave sites protected and tidy.

Grounds and garden maintenance
Undertake mowing, edging, raking, weeding, sweeping and general garden maintenance.
Prune shrubs,



maintain roses, and assist with planting and mulching.
Operate and carry out basic maintenance of tractors, mowers, edgers and brush cutters.
Apply chemicals as directed and in accordance with secure work procedures.
Assist with landscaping, general maintenance and minor construction projects.

Other operational duties
Clean and maintain plant, tools, equipment and vehicles.
Safely load, secure and transport equipment and operate vehicles.
Report hazards, damage and incidents promptly.
Participate in machinery and equipment training.
Assist with cemetery improvements and other operational tasks as directed.

About you

Can undertake physical work outdoors.
Has a practical approach and an interest in grounds maintenance and machinery.
Follows instructions and safe work procedures carefully.
Shows sensitivity, discretion and respect when working around grieving families.
Is willing to learn burial, cremation and chapel service procedures.

Previous experience in grounds maintenance, gardening, machinery operation or cemetery work would be an advantage.
