VEX Group is growing, and we're looking for an experienced Draftsman / Estimator to join our Mackay-based team.We pride ourselves on maintaining a positive workplace culture and are looking for someone who can combine strong drafting and design capabilities with practical estimating and fabrication knowledge.What We OfferCompetitive salary package of $100,000 – $130,000Monthly RDOOpportunities for professional development and career growthCollaborative and creative working environmentDiverse range of mining, fabrication, manufacturing and project workOpportunity to work closely with our workshop, engineering, projects and business development teamsKey ResponsibilitiesDrafting & DesignCreate detailed technical drawings, fabrication drawings and plans using SolidWorks (preferred)Develop detailed 3D models and drawings for mechanical and structural projectsInterpret sketches, site measurements, scopes of work, client specifications and engineering informationDevelop and refine mechanical and structural designs based on project requirementsProduce workshop-ready drawings, assemblies, layouts and detailed fabrication drawingsCollaborate with clients, engineers, Workshop Foremen, the Business Development Manager and other team members to ensure designs are practical, accurate and fit for purposeRevise drawings to incorporate client, engineering and workshop feedbackEnsure drawings comply with relevant industry standards, specifications and project requirementsMaintain organised documentation,



drawing registers and revision controlReview client enquiries, scopes of work, drawings and specifications to determine project requirementsPrepare detailed estimates and quotations for fabrication, manufacturing, repair and project worksComplete accurate material take-offs and quantity take-offs from drawings, models and client documentationEstimate labour hours, materials, equipment, subcontractor requirements and other project costsObtain and review supplier and subcontractor pricing where requiredAssist with preparing competitive tender and quotation submissionsIdentify scope gaps, exclusions, assumptions, risks and potential variations during the estimating processWork closely with the Business Development Manager, Workshop Manager to develop practical and commercially competitive solutionsAssist with determining fabrication methodologies and realistic workshop labour requirementsMaintain accurate estimating records, costing information and quotation documentationAssist with handover of successful quotations to the workshop/project delivery teamReview completed projects against estimates to improve the accuracy of future labour and material allowancesRequirements for SuccessPrevious experience as a Draftsman,



Estimator or Draftsman / Estimator within fabrication, manufacturing, mining or a similar heavy industryStrong proficiency in drafting and 3D modelling software – SolidWorks preferredGood understanding of structural steel and mechanical fabricationAbility to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and scopes of workExperience with material take-offs, labour estimating and project costingPractical understanding of fabrication processes and workshop operationsHigh level of attention to detail and accuracyStrong organisational and time-management skillsAbility to manage multiple quotations, drawings and priorities simultaneouslyStrong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across workshop, engineering, projects and management teamsTrade background and/or previous hands-on fabrication experience would be highly regardedQualification in drafting, engineering, mechanical design or a related field would be advantageousAbout UsVEX Group is a Mackay-based, locally owned and family-oriented company that puts its people first.We provide mechanical, structural, engineering, fabrication, maintenance and project solutions to clients across the Queensland resources sector.Our capabilities span design and engineering, 3D scanning, drafting, custom fabrication, workshop services, on-site maintenance, shutdowns, construction and project delivery, allowing our team to be involved in projects from initial concept and estimating through to fabrication and installation.
