APS5 Rights Officer
Location: Canberra, ACT
Duration: Until June 30 2027 with extension possibility
Salary: 88k - 96k per annum

Our federal client is seeking a Rights Officer to provide advice on copyright, intellectual property, permissions, and access matters relating to significant cultural and research collections. Working in a cooperative and supportive team, you'll help ensure collection materials are managed responsibly while supporting access for communities, researchers, and stakeholders. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional passionate about rights management, cultural collections, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake copyright clearances for exhibitions, publications, public enquiries, and other collection-related activities.
- Assess and apply relevant legislation, organisational policies, depositor agreements, and privacy obligations when making rights recommendations.
- Research copyright ownership, intellectual property rights, permissions, and restrictions relating to collection materials.
- Support collection management teams in identifying and documenting appropriate rights information for incoming materials.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of rights management systems, processes, and tools.
- Assist in reviewing and updating access, use, and permissions policies and supporting documentation.
- Provide advice and guidance on rights, permissions, and access matters across the organisation.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders on complex and sensitive issues.
- Escalate higher-risk matters with clear, evidence-based recommendations.
- Contribute to broader team priorities and continuous improvement initiatives.
About you:
- Working knowledge of copyright and intellectual property principles.
- Experience interpreting legislation, policies, agreements, and rights frameworks.
- Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to assess rights, conditions, obligations, and associated risks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- High attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Experience contributing to process improvement, knowledge sharing, and team objectives.
- Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgement when dealing with complex or sensitive matters.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Confidence using collaboration and information management platforms such as Microsoft Teams and SharePoint.
