Ecolink Consulting

Northcote

Ecolink Consulting is a small ecological consultancy based in Northcote, Melbourne. We provide ecological assessment and advice to private clients, government agencies and other consulting firms, predominantly across Victoria.

We pride ourselves on providing high-quality, pragmatic and ecologically responsible advice while remaining small enough to offer our staff considerable flexibility, autonomy and involvement in a diverse range of projects.

The role

We are looking for an experienced ecologist to join our team. We are interested in hearing from botanists, zoologists and general ecologists with strong field skills and an interest in undertaking a diverse range of ecological work.

This is very much a hands-on ecology position. Fieldwork is a significant part of the role, and we are looking for someone who is both capable of and genuinely enjoys undertaking field assessments. Depending on your expertise, this may include flora and vegetation assessments, fauna surveys, habitat assessments, threatened species surveys and other ecological investigations.

Importantly, we are looking for someone who can take ownership of an assigned project and progress it with a high degree of independence — undertaking the fieldwork, managing their time, analysing and interpreting results, and preparing clear, scientifically robust reports without requiring close day-to-day supervision.

About you

We are more interested in finding the right ecologist than filling a particular level or technical niche. Ideally, you will have:

- A tertiary qualification in ecology, botany, zoology or a related discipline.

A research-based Honours, Masters or PhD qualification will be highly regarded;
- Strong practical field ecology skills and demonstrated expertise in flora, fauna or, ideally, both;
- Demonstrated experience identifying Victorian or south-eastern Australian flora and/or fauna in the field;
- Excellent scientific and technical writing skills;
- The ability and willingness to undertake fieldwork independently, including regional and overnight fieldwork where required;
- The initiative, judgement and organisational skills to work independently and take responsibility for completing assigned work;
- A practical understanding of relevant Victorian and Commonwealth environmental legislation and policy;
- Strong communication skills, a current driver's licence and Australian working rights.

For botanically focused applicants, current Vegetation Quality Assessment (VQA) accreditation is highly desirable, but not essential. For zoologists, established botanical expertise is not essential, although an interest in developing practical flora identification and vegetation assessment skills would be highly regarded.

Previous ecological consulting experience is desirable but not essential.

Applicants from government, research, natural resource management or other relevant backgrounds are welcome where they can demonstrate the ability to work independently, meet deadlines and operate effectively in a consulting environment.

We expect the position will particularly suit a strong intermediate to hands-on senior ecologist. More senior ecologists who still enjoy substantial fieldwork are encouraged to apply, as are less experienced applicants who already have strong field skills, write well and can demonstrate that they are capable of working independently.

Working at Ecolink

We offer:

- A competitive salary package commensurate with experience and capability;
- Considerable autonomy and responsibility for your own work;
- A diverse mix of field and office-based ecological projects;
- Flexible working hours and the option of full-time or negotiated part-time employment (minimum three days per week, with four or more days preferred);
- Time off in lieu where fieldwork extends beyond agreed working hours;
- Company laptop, mobile phone, field equipment and field clothing; and
- Career development relevant to your role and interests.

We have an office in Northcote and, as a small team, value spending time working together. When not undertaking fieldwork, we would generally expect the successful applicant to work from the Northcote office approximately 2–3 days per week, with flexibility around project and personal requirements.
