Senior Electrical Engineer | Step Up to Associate | Building Services | Brisbane
Roles like this that allow you to fast track your experience to management don't come up very often; if you want to be an engineer forever don't read on!
Build and lead the electrical team. Health, education, aviation and data centre projects. Clear path to Associate Director, with a package that grows as you deliver. Hybrid, Brisbane.
Why You Will Be Excited About This Role
Most Senior Electrical Engineer roles in Brisbane Building Services hand you somebody else's team, somebody else's processes and somebody else's clients. This is the rare one where you get a blank sheet, and a serious balance sheet sitting behind it.
We're looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to build the electrical capability inside our client's Brisbane Building Services team. Our client is a long-established international engineering consultancy, privately owned, headquartered in Asia, with a substantial regional footprint and a history in Australia going back decades.
Their Brisbane office is already well regarded for structures, civil and facades. What's new is Building Services, and a newly appointed Brisbane services leader who has been given both the mandate and the funding to grow it properly.
They have done exactly this before, and recently. In another Australian office they went from a standing start to a team of around 30, mostly Building Services, because the person leading it was told to build it their own way. Same deal here.
Twelve months in, success looks like this: you've won and delivered electrical design work under your own name, you've hired one or two engineers underneath you, and you've had a real say in the kind of projects the Brisbane team goes after.
- Build the Brisbane electrical team from the ground up, your structure, your hires, your standards
- Genuine input into the work you chase, not just the work you're handed
- Backing from an established MEP team interstate and offshore design support, so you're building a team rather than carrying one alone
- A clear path to Associate Director for the right person. The ceiling here is your capability, not a queue
Why You Will Like Working Here
The business is international and well capitalised, which in practice means they hire ahead of the work rather than after it. You won't be told to wait until the team bills another half a million before you can bring someone on.
The connections are real too. Work is already flowing into Australia from relationships the parent business holds with tier one contractors offshore (in particular a very exciting international project that will be run from the Brisbane office - I can't say much more just yet! ssshhhh),
and the Brisbane services leader has strong existing relationships with builders and architects here.
Locally you're still small, and that's the point. Flat structure, quick decisions, direct access to the people running the business, and no six layers of management to get an idea approved. You also sit alongside a strong structural, civil and facades team in the same office, so multi-discipline pursuits and internal referral work are there from day one.
They have a genuine appetite for doing things differently. They're already trialling AI-assisted preliminary plant and riser sizing so architects can get moving earlier in concept. If you have a better way of doing something, someone will actually listen. In Queensland Building Services, that's rarer than it should be.
- Hybrid working. Team members currently work two days a week from home, and they make it work
- A clear path to Associate Director, with a package that moves as you hit the marks
- Real autonomy over how your team is structured and how the work gets done
- Exposure to national and international work through the wider group
- A long-term career path, because you're building something you can lead
What You Will Be Working On
- Electrical design and design management across health, commercial, education, aviation and data centre projects
- International data centre work through the wider group, with real travel opportunities for people who want them
- Major hospital redevelopment and upgrade work across Queensland and the Northern Territory
- Panel appointments with significant Queensland asset owners in education and aviation
- Peer reviews, electrical design certification and RPEQ sign-off work, which keeps the pipeline warm while the team builds
- Working directly with builders on D&C; projects to define where consultant scope stops and subcontractor scope starts. The business is actively selling that clarity to the market and it is a genuine point of difference
- Business development alongside the Brisbane services leader, with architects, builders and asset owners
- Recruiting, mentoring and setting the technical standard for the electrical engineers who come in under you
What Type Of Person Will Be Successful
This is a build, not a management job. The person who does well here will be happy to design as well as lead, at least in the first year,
and will be genuinely ambitious about what the team could become.
Must have
- Building Services electrical design experience within a consultancy environment
- Extensive knowledge of, and experience designing to, Australian Standards
- Around 6/7+ years' experience, senior enough to run projects and clients without supervision. A Senior Electrical Engineer with around 10 years in building services would be highly desirable, and a walk-up start for this role
- RPEQ registration, or clearly on the path to it
- Confident and credible in front of clients, builders and architects
Will help
- Experience across health, commercial, education, aviation or data centres
- Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD, though you won't be in them day to day. Bluebeam or Navisworks a bonus
- Exposure to D&C; delivery and working alongside contractors
- Some business development or bid involvement
- Experience mentoring or leading junior engineers
You won't have a big local team behind you to start with. If that sounds like the appeal rather than the problem, this is your role.
