Are you an experienced Workers’ Compensation or Personal Injury lawyer looking to make the move in-house?
I’m working with a rapidly growing specialist insurance business that is looking for a Senior Legal Manager to join their Sydney team in a newly created leadership role.
This is a great opportunity for a lawyer who is ready to step away from traditional private practice and have a broader impact within a business. You’ll move beyond individual matters and focus on leading people, managing risk, providing strategic legal guidance and helping shape how the legal function operates.
This part of the business has grown significantly over the past year, expanding from around 50 people to more than 200, creating a genuine opportunity to join at an exciting stage of its growth.
Around 70% of the role is focused on people leadership. You’ll lead a team of approximately 13 legal specialists through two direct reports, working closely with the existing senior leadership team to develop capability, improve performance and support the continued growth of the function.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead and develop a team of approximately 13 legal specialists through two direct reports;
- Coach, support and develop Legal Managers and their teams;
- Provide senior legal oversight across complex Workers’ Compensation matters, including work injury damages, disputes, industrial deafness and fatality matters;
- Act as a senior escalation point for complex legal issues and provide strategic guidance to the team;
- Work closely with Claims leadership and senior stakeholders across the business;
- Provide advice on legal risk, governance and operational matters;
- Help shape the structure, capability and processes of the legal function as the business continues to grow;
- Identify opportunities to improve legal processes, performance and ways of working;
- Build robust relationships with senior stakeholders across the business; and
- Contribute to broader business initiatives, change projects and continuous improvement.
What they’re looking for
- An experienced lawyer with a strong background in Workers’ Compensation, Personal Injury or a closely related area;
- A current unrestricted NSW Practising Certificate;
- Strong technical legal knowledge combined with an interest in the broader commercial and operational side of a business;
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including coaching, developing or leading legal professionals;
- Someone who is ready to move into a broader in-house role and have more influence beyond individual matters;
- Strong understanding of legal risk, governance and operational processes;
- Confident engaging with senior stakeholders and able to communicate complex legal issues clearly to non-legal audiences;
- A commercially minded approach and the ability to balance legal risk with business outcomes;
- A collaborative and supportive leadership style; and
- Someone who enjoys developing people and building high-performing teams.
You don’t need to have held a Senior Legal Manager or Group Manager title previously.
This could be a great next step for a Senior Associate or experienced lawyer who has strong technical knowledge and demonstrated leadership capability and is ready to make the move in-house.
What’s in it for you
- Up to $170,000 + super dependent on experience;
- 2 days WFH, 9 day fortnight, and RDO;
- Newly created in-house leadership role;
- Make the move from private practice into a broader commercial environment;
- Work closely with senior leadership across the business;
- Have influence over the direction and development of the legal function;
- Join a business experiencing significant growth; and
- Positive, easy-going culture with strong tenure across the team.
