The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and The Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) is seeking high-performing APS 6 officers to join Workforce, Industry and Supply Chain (WISC) Division. These roles offers a unique opportunity to help develop the workforce, industrial capability and supply chains that will underpin one of the nation's most significant national security and industrial undertakings.
You will have the opportunity to engage with senior leaders across government and industry, influence strategic decision-making, and contribute to increasing Australian participation in AUKUS; supporting the long-term growth and resilience of the Nuclear-Powered Submarine enterprise.
APS 6 officers play an significant role in supporting WISC's objectives through policy development, program delivery, performance reporting, stakeholder engagement; and industrial development. Depending on the role, you may contribute to strategic policy, industrial strategy and analysis, workforce initiatives, supply chain development or industry uplift activities; while working with stakeholders across government, Defence, industry, academia and international partners.
Key Responsibilities may include:
- Providing high-quality advice and recommendations to support strategic decision-making by senior executives, Government and key stakeholders.
- Contributing to strategic assessments, performance analysis, industrial intelligence or policy development activities that support future workforce, industrial and supply chain decision-making.
- Preparing briefs, submissions, correspondence, analytical products and other advice on complex and often sensitive issues.
- Conducting research, analysis and strategic assessments to identify workforce, industry and supply chain and industrial capability opportunities, risks, constraints and future requirements.
- Managing projects, programs and work priorities to deliver outcomes in line with organisational objectives.
- Building and maintaining productive relationships across government, Defence, industry, academia and international partners.
- Supporting, mentoring and developing team members to foster a high-performing, collaborative and inclusive workplace culture

About our Team
Working at the centre of one of Australia's most significant industrial and workforce transformations, the Division leads enterprise workforce planning, industry development, supply chain readiness and strategic uplift initiatives that support the long-term success of the AUKUS partnership.
- The Industry Strategy team develops and evolves Australia’s AUKUS Submarine Industry Strategy, provides strategic advice on submarine industrial capability requirements, and helps ensure future Defence policy and strategic guidance reflects the needs of the Australian and Trilateral Submarine Industrial Bases.
- The Industry Program and Governance team provides governance, integration, reporting and risk management functions that support coordinated delivery across the industry portfolio, strengthen enterprise decision-making, and improve visibility of progress, risks and opportunities across government, industry and AUKUS stakeholders.
- The Supply Chain Strategy and Resilience team identifies and develops future supply chain policy opportunities and capability requirements to mitigate vulnerabilities, by providing strategic supply chain planning, demand signals and resilience measures to support Australian industry readiness and long-term industrial growth ensuring the Australian submarine industrial base supply chain is available and protected across Australia’s Nuclear Powered Submarine enterprise.
- The Supply Chain Programs team delivers supplier qualification, capability uplift and participation programs, such as Defence Industry Vendor Qualification (DIVQ) and Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification (AUSSQ) programs, that strengthen Australian industry integration into domestic, UK and US submarine supply chains.
- The Industry Uplift team leads initiatives that reduce barriers to participation, strengthen sovereign industrial capability and support Australian industry access to Australian, UK and US submarine supply chain opportunities through targeted interventions, partnerships, grants and investment programs.
- The Industry Engagement team leads engagement with industry across the Nuclear Powered Submarine enterprise, improving awareness of opportunities,
facilitating collaboration and providing industry insights to support industrial development and enterprise decision-making.
- The Enterprise Workforce Delivery and Governance team deliver workforce initiatives to strengthen Australia's workforce pipeline, in partnership with industry, governments and education providers, and support integrated planning, risk management, and performance monitoring.
- The Skills and Training Academy Campus team leads the design of the Skills and Training Academy as a long-term training capability to support the nuclear powered submarine workforce, ensuring training infrastructure, governance and operating arrangements align with future workforce demand.
