About the Opportunity

As a member of the Irradiations Team at the Centre for Accelerator Science (CAS), the Accelerator Scientist - Radiobiologist will support national and international research and industry users through the delivery and development of CAS's accelerator-based biological irradiation capability.

You will develop and deliver radiobiology user programs, using ion irradiation to investigate the effects and interactions of radiation with biological matter across applications including fundamental radiobiology, particle therapy, pharma, space radiation research, and more.

You will also be responsible for the operation, maintenance and ongoing development of the CAS biology laboratory, including equipment maintenance, recent biological assays and experimental methodologies, and protocols for pre- and post-irradiation sample handling.

Working closely with accelerator scientists, you will develop expertise in accelerator operation, learning to plan and conduct independently radiobiology irradiations and to integrate biological experimental requirements with accelerator-based irradiation capabilities. You will also contribute to national and international collaborations and the continued growth of the CAS user base.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

- Provide scientific and technical support, advice and training to national and international CAS users, ensuring user projects achieve optimal outcomes and a high-quality user experience.

- Support user projects through experimental planning, accelerator beamline and instrument operation, experiments and simulations, data analysis and interpretation.

- Engage with the Australian and international scientific community to develop the CAS user and collaborator base and maximise facility utilisation.

- Apply international best practice and emerging technologies to develop and expand accelerator capabilities for research, innovation and industry applications.

- Contribute to the CAS Asset Management Plan, including equipment maintenance, calibration, documentation and collaboration with CAS and ANSTO support teams.

- Contribute scientific and technical expertise to the planning and installation of new beamlines, accelerator facilities and capabilities.

- Engage with industry and commercial-access users to promote CAS capabilities, identify opportunities and support research translation and commercial outcomes.

- Promote CAS and ANSTO through outreach activities, professional forums and scientific networks, highlighting the impact and benefits of the facility.

- Develop national and international research collaborations that generate research outcomes, increase CAS facility usage and support publications in international journals.

- Undertake research and development aligned with user needs to strengthen accelerator expertise and enhance the scientific profile of CAS.
