Grounds and Maintenance Officer Position Purpose

The Grounds and Maintenance Officer is responsible for the presentation, maintenance and development of King’s College grounds, buildings, facilities and equipment. The role contributes to a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment for students, staff, families and visitors.

The successful applicant is expected to actively contribute to the life of King’s College and demonstrate Christian values through their conduct, relationships, work ethic and service to the College community.

Key Responsibilities 1. Grounds and Gardens

- Maintain gardens, lawns, playing fields and grassed areas to a high standard.

- Undertake planting, watering where permissible, weeding, fertilising, pruning, mowing, edging and general grounds maintenance.

- Maintain fencing and grounds infrastructure.

- Safely operate, maintain and store relevant machinery and equipment, including mowers, whipper snippers and tractors.

- Inspect grounds and promptly identify and address hazards and maintenance requirements.

2. Buildings and General Maintenance

- Undertake minor repairs and routine maintenance of buildings, facilities, fixtures, fittings and equipment.

- Identify maintenance issues and undertake repairs or arrange specialist assistance where required.

- Maintain tools, equipment and machinery in a safe and serviceable condition.

- Assist with planned and preventative maintenance programs.

- Arrange and supervise contractors when required.

- Ensure contractors comply with College safety, site and child safety requirements.

- Maintain appropriate maintenance and contractor records.

3. Health and Safety

- Promote and maintain a safe environment across College grounds, buildings and facilities.

- Conduct regular inspections and identify hazards and risks.

- Take appropriate action to minimise risks and report significant concerns to College leadership.

- Ensure tools, machinery, chemicals and equipment are used and stored safely.

- Comply with College WHS policies, procedures and relevant legislation.

4. Budget and Resources

- Work within approved grounds and maintenance budgets.

- Use College resources, equipment and materials responsibly and efficiently.

- Obtain quotes and assist with procurement when required.

- Monitor equipment condition, servicing and replacement needs.

- Report significant expenditure or maintenance requirements to the relevant College leader.

5. General Duties

- Deliver goods, equipment and materials to College areas as required.

- Assist with set-up and pack-up of facilities for events and activities.

- Attend College events outside normal hours when reasonably required.

- Respond to urgent maintenance and grounds matters.

- Maintain workshops, storage areas, tools and equipment in a safe and organised condition.

- Work cooperatively with College staff and undertake other reasonable duties as directed by the Principal or delegate.

The Grounds and Maintenance Officer is expected to:

Child Safety and Wellbeing – Mandatory Expectations





King’s College is committed to the safety, wellbeing and protection of all children and young people. Child safety is a non-negotiable responsibility of this position.

The successful applicant must:

- Comply with all College Child Safety and Wellbeing policies, procedures, Code of Conduct and relevant legislation.

- Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to protecting children from harm, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

- Maintain appropriate qualified boundaries with students at all times.

- Ensure interactions with students are appropriate, professional, observable and authorised.

- Never engage in inappropriate physical contact, communication, conversations or conduct with students.

- Avoid private, secretive or inappropriate communication with students, including through personal phones, email or social media.

- Avoid being alone with students wherever reasonably practicable. Necessary interactions must occur in an appropriate, visible and authorised setting.

- Never transport a student in a personal vehicle unless specifically authorised under College policy.

- Exercise particular care when working in areas occupied by students.

- Secure and safely manage tools, machinery, chemicals, equipment, materials and work areas.

- Ensure contractors and external personnel comply with College child safety requirements and are appropriately supervised.

- Immediately report any child safety concern, allegation, disclosure, suspected abuse or inappropriate conduct in accordance with College procedures.

- Respond appropriately to student concerns or disclosures without investigating or promising confidentiality.

- Maintain confidentiality and share information only with authorised persons.

- Complete required child safety induction, training and professional development.

- Support an environment where children feel safe, respected, listened to and empowered to raise concerns.

Failure to comply with child safety requirements may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment, subject to applicable processes and legislation.

Child Safety as a Condition of Employment

Child safety responsibilities apply whenever the employee is undertaking duties on behalf of King’s College, including normal working hours, after-hours events, activities and other College-related interactions.

The successful applicant must hold and maintain:

- A valid Working with Children Check.

- Any other clearance or screening required by the College or relevant legislation.

- All required child safety training and compliance requirements.

The College may require additional screening, training or professional development as reasonably required.

Any conduct that places a child or young person at risk is inconsistent with the expectations of this position.

2. Grounds and Maintenance Experience

- Relevant trade qualification and/or equivalent experience, preferably 3–4 years in grounds, facilities, property maintenance, building maintenance, horticulture or a related field.





- Demonstrated skills in gardening, mowing, landscaping, grounds maintenance and general repairs.

- Experience operating and maintaining relevant equipment and machinery.

- Ability to identify maintenance issues and undertake repairs or arrange specialist assistance.

4. Organisation and Initiative

- Ability to plan and prioritise grounds and maintenance activities.

- Ability to contribute to preventative maintenance programs.

- Strong organisation, attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

- Ability to work within a budget and use resources responsibly.

- Initiative and flexibility to respond to changing College needs.

5. Health, Safety and Compliance

- Understanding of workplace health and safety requirements.

- Ability to identify hazards and minimise risks.

- Commitment to safe operation and storage of machinery, tools, chemicals and equipment.

- Ability to comply with College policies, procedures and relevant legislation.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to work respectfully with students, staff, families, contractors and service providers.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

7. Personal Attributes

8. Child Safety – Mandatory

- Safely manage work areas, equipment, machinery, chemicals and contractors.

- Report child safety concerns, allegations and disclosures immediately.

- Respond appropriately without investigating or promising confidentiality.

- Maintain required clearances and complete mandatory child safety training.

9. Qualifications and Requirements

- Relevant trade qualification and/or equivalent practical experience.

- Current Working with Children Check.

- Current driver’s licence.

- Appropriate licences, tickets or competency to operate relevant machinery where required.

- Relevant first aid qualifications highly regarded.

- Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety.

- Ability to comply with all College policies, procedures and child safety requirements.

The successful applicant will demonstrate professionalism, initiative, reliability and personal responsibility. They will take ownership of the presentation, safety and maintenance of the College environment and proactively identify issues.

The Grounds and Maintenance Officer is expected to maintain high standards, work safely, communicate effectively, treat all members of the College community with respect, demonstrate Christian values, prioritise student safety and contribute positively to the culture and broader life of King’s College.

The Officer will undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the position, qualifications and level of responsibility as directed by the Principal or delegate.
