Primary objective
Provide support in maintaining Laynhapuy Homelands School facilities, including buildings, grounds, vehicles and equipment, to ensure a
secure, secure and functional environment in accordance with school requirements and Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations.
Context statement
Laynhapuy Homelands School (LHS)
comprises nine Homeland Learning Centres (HLCs) across Northeast Arnhem Land, supported by a
central resource centre in Yirrkala. The Maintenance Officer is based in Yirrkala and works collaboratively with homeland-based
Maintenance Officers to support the upkeep, safety and maintenance of school facilities across all sites.
Key duties and responsibilities
• Inspect, repair and maintain school buildings, fixtures, fittings, grounds, vehicles and equipment to ensure facilities are safe, functional
and maintained to a high standard.
- Identify and respond to WHS risks and hazards, taking immediate action where appropriate and reporting issues requiring further
attention.
- Coordinate and monitor the work of contractors to ensure maintenance and repair works are completed to required specifications and
standards.
- Work collaboratively with homeland-based Maintenance Officers to support the upkeep and maintenance of Homeland Learning
Centre buildings, grounds and equipment.
- Provide operational support as required, including mail collection, relocation of furniture and equipment, local purchasing, asset control,
security and vehicle maintenance.
- Regularly inspect school premises and respond promptly to maintenance, security or property issues, including damage, vandalism or
break-ins.
- Provide practical and logistical support for school excursions, camps, sports days and other school activities and events as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, students, community members
and contractors.
2. Demonstrated practical skills and experience in building maintenance, repairs and general handyman work, with the ability to complete
work safely and to a high standard.
3. Relevant trade skills, experience or technical knowledge applicable to the maintenance of buildings, grounds, vehicles and equipment.
4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently, use initiative, prioritise tasks and work with limited
supervision.
5. Knowledge and practical understanding of WHS requirements relevant to maintenance activities and safe work practices.
Desirable
1. Experience working in remote Aboriginal community schools.
Further information
The successful applicant must hold a valid Ochre Card, or have the ability to obtain one prior to commencement, and hold a current NT
driver licence or have the ability to obtain one. The position requires regular travel to remote homeland communities, predominantly on
unsealed roads in 4WD vehicles, and may involve overnight stays and camping. Accommodation is not provided with this position.
