Position Description: NDIS Support Worker
Role purpose
The NDIS Support Worker will provide individualised, person-centred support to an autistic 18-year-old. The role focuses on building independence, confidence and practical skills while respecting the participant’s choices, preferences, communication style and NDIS goals.
Key responsibilities
- Support daily living skills, including cooking, laundry, cleaning, personal care and organisation
- Assist the participant to develop routines, manage time and plan daily activities
- Support executive functioning, including starting tasks, setting priorities, solving problems and adapting to change
- Support safe community participation, including using public transport, shopping and attending appointments
- Help everyday money-management skills
- Support communication, social participation, personal boundaries and conflict-resolution skills
- Encourage healthy routines relating to sleep, exercise and general wellbeing
- Provide medication reminders where authorised and within the worker’s training and responsibilities
- Help the participant prepare for healthcare appointments
- Support the participant to explore hobbies, set personal goals and build confidence
- Maintain accurate progress notes and report relevant information according to NDIS and organisational requirements
- Protect the participant’s privacy, dignity, safety and confidentiality
- Follow the participant’s support plan, risk-management procedures and relevant NDIS requirements
Essential skills and experience
The successful applicant will:
- Have experience supporting autistic teenagers or young adults
- Understand autism, sensory needs and different communication styles
- Understand person-centred practice and the NDIS
- Be patient, dependable, respectful and encouraging
- Support choice, control, dignity and age-appropriate independence
- Communicate effectively with the participant, family and other members of the support team
- Remain calm, adaptable and supportive when routines or circumstances change
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries
Qualifications and requirements
- Current NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
- Relevant disability, community services or individual support qualification, or suitable experience
- Current driver’s licence and reliable insured vehicle, if transport is required
- Appropriate worker insurance if engaged as an independent support worker
- ABN
- CV and Satisfactory references
- Completion of required NDIS worker orientation training
- Willingness to complete participant-specific training as required
Employment details
- Position: NDIS Support Worker
- Participant: Autistic young adult, 18 years old
- Employment type: Casual or part-time, to be confirmed
- Location: Port Maquarie
- Hours: aprox 6 hours per week
- Pay rate: $35
- The support worker must provide respectful and practical assistance tailored to the participant’s individual strengths, interests, support needs and goals.
Pay: $35.00 – $40.00 per hour
Expected hours: 6.0 per week
Work Location: In person
