Description
ASHM is a not-for-profit organisation seeking an experienced National Policy and Education leader to provide strategic direction across the portfolio. The role will help shape policy priorities, strengthen key partnerships and support ASHM’s broader organisational strategy across the HIV, blood-borne viruses (BBVs) and sexual and reproductive health sectors.

You’re a strategic and collaborative leader who enjoys working across policy, stakeholder engagement and organisational strategy. You’re confident navigating complex environments, building partnerships and identifying opportunities to achieve meaningful outcomes.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has strong policy and strategic leadership experience.
- Understands health systems and the broader policy landscape.
- Is confident engaging with government, senior stakeholders and diverse sector partners.
- Brings strong people leadership, sound judgement and a genuine interest in public health or the not-for-profit sector.
Location: Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne office, with remote work also available. Open to applicants based in any of these locations.
Employment Status: Permanent, Full time
Salary: $125-$135k + Super (commensurate with skills and experience)

Key Responsibilities
Strategic leadership
- Lead the development and implementation of the portfolio strategy
- Monitor and identify emerging trends and opportunities in the sector
- Drive strategic planning, innovation and continuous improvement.
Policy and sector leadership
- Lead ASHM’s policy contribution and develop organisational positions on priority issues.
- Represent ASHM across national forums, advisory committees and sector events.
- Build and promote ASHM relationships with governments, peak bodies and partners
Financial Management
- Own the portfolio budget and lead annual budget development
- Monitor financial performance and return on investment.
- Recommend strategic investment decisions to the Senior Management Team (SMT)
- Ensure financial sustainability of the National Policy and Education portfolio
Portfolio leadership
- Set strategic direction across disease portfolios.
- Balance competing priorities to achieve strategic outcomes.
- Lead, coach and support Program Managers.
Executive leadership
- Represent the National Policy and Education portfolio and provide expert policy advice to the (SMT)
- Prepare CEO and Board papers on an ad hoc basis represent the National Policy and Education portfolio as an invited guest at Board Meetings
- Contribute to organisational strategy and work collaboratively across ASHM.
Business development
- Identify and develop strategic partnerships that enhance ASHM’s funding position
- Lead major grant applications, tenders and commissioned projects
- Enhance the reach and impact of the National Policy and Education portfolio by fostering strategic relationships and opportunities aligned with ASHM’s purpose and expertise.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Tertiary qualification in public policy, health, social sciences, management or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategic plans and policy positions.
- Experience working across different sectors or organisations, including government and complex health or policy environments.
- Experience managing budgets and financial performance.
- Experience leading and developing teams.
- Experience operating at a senior leadership or Executive level.
Desirable
- Experience in HIV, blood-borne viruses (BBVs) or sexual and reproductive health.
- Experience representing an organisation on committees, advisory groups or sector forums.
- Experience with grants, tenders, commissioned projects or business development.
Skills and Abilities
