Primary objective
As part of the Territory Pathology professional team, contribute to the provision of a safe, efficient, clinically responsive, comprehensive
diagnostic, analytical and advisory service for Territory Pathology clients in Darwin and surrounds.
Context statement
The position is for a scientist with sound knowledge and skills in clinical microbiology, and developing knowledge in mycobacteriology,
mycology, and/or parasitology. Participate in on-call and shift arrangements as required by the local work unit. The position maps to CLF
4 and 5 in the Northern Territory Public Sector Capability and Leadership Framework document.
Key duties and responsibilities
Under direct supervision, and within current limits of competency, analyse microbiology specimens using a range of technical skills and
laboratory analysers to produce timely and clinically useful results. Perform equipment preventative maintenance and monitor availability
of reagents and consumables currently in use. Authorise results and provide advice in accordance with competency levels. Follow defined
service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high
quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Education and Qualifications: Possession of a degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent is mandatory
2. Work History: A minimum of 1 year work experience in a Medical Microbiology Laboratory.
Desirable
1. Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to follow documented procedures, in analysing microbiology specimens using a range of technical skills and
laboratory analysers while also developing organisational skills and understanding of workflow efficiencies to become an effective
microbiology team member.
- Demonstrated ability to develop knowledge of the physiological, clinical, pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical
considerations that will form the basis of advice on the clinical significance of microbiology results.
2. Personal Qualities:
• Demonstrated ability to follow the directions of a supervisor and recognise differing work styles of others while realising the impact
of personal behaviour on others, factoring these in when contributing to the development of team plans, strategies and goals,
- Act on constructive feedback, taking personal responsibility for the completion of work tasks and requesting assistance in a timely
manner to deliver quality outcomes.

skills and laboratory analysers. Authorise results and provide appropriate clinical advice to junior staff and external clients. Perform
equipment preventative maintenance and monitor availability of reagents and consumables in use and initiate ordering as required. Follow
defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high
quality, safe services, and workplaces. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling
behaviour.

2. Work History: A minimum of 5 years work experience in a Medical Microbiology Laboratory.

1. Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to perform higher level technical procedures and to provide clinically useful commentary on microbiology
results to more junior pathology staff and other health professionals as knowledge of pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical
factors impacting on the provision of clinically useful results develops.
- Demonstrated organisational skills with an understanding of workplace efficiency within a team structure.
- Demonstrated ability to assist with the delivery of training and in active monitoring of stock levels in daily use to initiate ordering
in a timely manner.
2. Personal Qualities:
- Demonstrated ability to operate within boundaries, taking personal responsibility for completion of tasks in a timely manner,
acknowledging personal development needs and demonstrating a commitment to learning and self-development, while providing
timely praise, recognition, constructive feedback.
