Position Overview:

An opportunity has come up for a Technical Officer to join our incredible team in the Histology Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a range of laboratory duties to support various departments within our laboratory.

Working under the direction of senior laboratory staff, the role involves specimen preparation and processing, embedding, microtomy, staining and other histology procedures, while maintaining compliance with laboratory procedures, quality standards and workplace health and safety requirements.

This role requires a valid paid Working with Children Check, as well as evidence of immunity to the specific diseases outlined under the NSW Health Category A mandatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Histology Technical Duties

- Receive, identify, and prepare pathology specimens for histological examination.
- Perform specimen fixation, processing, embedding, and microtomy in accordance with established procedures.
- Prepare and perform routine and special stains as required.
- Prepare slides and tissue sections for microscopic examination by pathologists.
- Maintain accurate specimen identification and traceability throughout the testing process.
- Assist with specimen dissection and grossing activities within the scope of training and competency.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.





Quality & Compliance

- Follow all laboratory policies, procedures, and documented work instructions.
- Maintain high standards of specimen integrity, accuracy, and turnaround times.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities.
- Identify, document and escalate errors, incidents, non-conformances or equipment issues appropriately.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
- Comply with relevant accreditation, regulatory, infection control, work health and safety and privacy requirements.

General Laboratory Support

- Maintain a clean, organised and safe laboratory environment
- Assist with workflow management to ensure specimens are processed efficiently and within required turnaround times
- Work collaboratively with pathologists, scientists, technical staff and other laboratory teams
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives within the Histology Department
- Undertake other reasonable duties within the scope of the role and level of competency

Qualifications & Skills:

- Relevant qualification in Medical Laboratory Science, Pathology or related discipline
- Minimum of 2 years laboratory experience in a Histopathology Diagnostic Laboratory
- Good knowledge of routine histopathology laboratory practice and techniques
- Previous experience in a histology laboratory setting, including grossing, is preferred.
- Skills:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to remain calm and effective in a busy laboratory setting.
- Ability to work independently
- Flexibility to work shifts and weekends as required
- Excellent time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work accurately and reliably

Pay: $36.81 – $40.84 per hour

Expected hours: 7.6 – 38.0 per week

Experience:

- Histology: 2 years (Preferred)
