Data Conversion Developer / Consultant
Location: Perth CBD, Western Australia
Engagement: 10-month contract with potential extension
About the Role:
Our client is undertaking a major enterprise platform transformation and is looking for an experienced Data Conversion Developer/ Consultant to join the project during a critical build and migration phase.
Working within the project data team, you will design, build and test the data conversion capability required to migrate information from multiple enterprise applications into a current Commodity Trading and Risk Management platform.
This is a hands-on development role for someone who is strong in SQL and Python and understands that successful data migration is about more than moving data. You will be responsible for translating source-to-target mappings and business rules into reliable conversion solutions, validating results, resolving discrepancies and helping prepare the program for a successful production cutover.
You will work closely with business SMEs, IT specialists and an implementation partner in a large, complex enterprise environment where data accuracy, traceability and delivery discipline matter.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Design, develop and test data conversion pipelines using SQL, Python and Databricks.
- Translate source-to-target mappings, transformation requirements and business rules into robust conversion logic.
- Profile, cleanse, transform and validate data from multiple enterprise source systems.
- Perform detailed reconciliation to demonstrate that converted data is complete, accurate and fit for business use.
- Investigate data migration defects and reconciliation discrepancies across data, code and business-rule layers.
- Work with business and IT SMEs to resolve data quality and conversion issues.
- Support mock conversions, migration rehearsals and production cutover activities.
- Maintain code using appropriate version control, DevOps and CI/CD practices.
- Work collaboratively with the wider project team and external implementation partner throughout the migration lifecycle.
Key Outcomes & Measures Success in this role will mean:
- Conversion pipelines are accurate, repeatable and ready for scheduled migration cycles.
- Source-to-target mappings and business rules are implemented correctly and can be clearly traced.
- Converted data reconciles against agreed source data and business rules.
- Data quality and conversion defects are identified, understood and resolved efficiently.
- Mock conversions and dress rehearsals progressively reduce risk ahead of production cutover.
- Business and technical stakeholders have clear visibility of conversion issues and readiness.
- Code, version control and deployment practices meet the program’s agreed development standards.
About You:
You are an experienced data engineer or developer who has personally delivered complex data migration or conversion work.
You are comfortable getting into the detail of SQL, Python, transformation logic and data reconciliation rather than operating solely at an orchestration or management level. You can explain how you have handled source-to-target mappings, exception processing and reconciliation, and how you proved that migrated data was complete and accurate.
You will also need to be methodical when troubleshooting, comfortable working independently and able to communicate technical data issues clearly with both technical and business stakeholders.
Must-Have Skills & Experience:
- Solid hands-on SQL development skills using T-SQL and/or SparkSQL.
- Strong Python development capability.
- 5+ years of experience across data engineering, data warehousing, ETL/ELT development or data migration.
- Demonstrated delivery experience across substantial data conversion or migration projects.
- Practical experience with data validation, reconciliation and data quality processes.
- Experience working with large and complex datasets across multiple source systems.
- Strong analytical,
troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to investigate issues across data, code, transformations and business rules.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a larger project team.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Bonus Points For:
- Hands-on Databricks Lakehouse experience.
- Spark, PySpark or SparkSQL.
- Delta Lake and Unity Catalog.
- Databricks Notebooks.
- Azure DevOps, Git and CI/CD experience.
- Agile enterprise project delivery experience.
- Previous involvement in mock conversions, dress rehearsals and production cutovers.
- Commodity trading, finance, supply chain or logistics industry exposure.
- Previous CTRM or ETRM platform migration experience.
Why Join?
This is an opportunity to take hands-on ownership of an important data workstream within a significant enterprise transformation program.
You will work with modern data technologies including Databricks, SQL and Python while solving complex migration and reconciliation challenges across multiple enterprise systems.
The role also offers exposure beyond pure development. You will work directly with business SMEs, technical specialists and an implementation partner, and your work will have a direct impact on migration readiness and the successful implementation of a new business-critical platform.
The initial engagement is for 10 months, with potential for extension. The recruitment process is expected to involve two stages covering technical capability and team fit.
