About the Balranald Healing Country Project

Through the Healing Country Project, Aboriginal Rangers work on Country across the Balranald area, caring for cultural and environmental values, supporting community resilience and disaster preparedness, recording cultural knowledge, and contributing to land management and community wellbeing.

About the role

As Ranger Team Lead, you'll be the first point of contact for the Ranger team and responsible for its day-to-day running. You'll lead a team of nine Rangers and a Ranger Team Coordinator, guide the work on Country, keep the team safe, and make sure cultural protocols are respected in everything the team does. You'll work under the guidance of Elders, Traditional Owners and Local Aboriginal Land Councils, and play a key part in building Ranger skills and supporting intergenerational knowledge transfer.

What you'll do

- Lead, mentor and support the Ranger team in a culturally secure, respectful and productive environment
- Run the daily toolbox meeting, allocate tasks and coordinate field activities such as cultural site monitoring and land and waterway assessments
- Hold overall responsibility for team safety in the field, including hazard management, incidents and safe remote-area travel
- Oversee vehicles, plant and equipment, including pre-start checks and defect reporting
- Supervise the collection of cultural knowledge, environmental data and field observations using tablets, GPS and photography
- Complete end-of-day reporting and monthly reports, manage attendance and leave, and approve timesheets
- Build strong relationships with Elders, LALCs, community members and partners, and represent the team at meetings and community events
- Prepare daily,



weekly and monthly work plans with support from the Ranger Team Coordinator

What you'll bring

Essential:

- Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- Experience working on Country, or in land management, cultural or community-based roles
- Demonstrated leadership and team supervision skills, including allocating work and managing attendance and performance
- Strong respect for cultural authority, Elders and community governance
- Ability to work safely in remote, hot and physically demanding environments
- Digital and written skills for data collection and daily reporting
- Current driver's licence
- 4WD training, or willingness to obtain
- Able to pass a Police Check and hold a valid NSW Employee Working With Children Check

Desirable:

- Previous experience as a Ranger, Cultural Officer or Ranger Team Lead
- Knowledge of local Country, culture or language
- Understanding of natural hazards such as floods, fire and seasonal indicators
- First Aid and CPR, or willingness to obtain

Pay: $43.00 – $55.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30.0 – 38.0 per week
