The Role
We're looking for an experienced Communications Engineer to provide specialist communications and systems engineering support to a Defence capability development team in Canberra. You'll contribute to capability documentation, technical standards, architectures and user needs that support the modernisation of a communications and information system.
You'll work collaboratively with Defence and industry stakeholders to analyse capability needs, assess technical options, support risk reduction activities and inform acquisition and integration decisions. The role calls for demonstrated experience in Defence communications, networking and systems engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Support development and maintenance of capability documentation, including operational concepts, user needs statements, requirements documentation, technical standards, architectures and associated Defence capability artefacts
- Provide specialist communications engineering advice on networking, satellite communications, cryptographic systems and associated technologies
- Analyse technical risks, constraints and opportunities associated with modernisation activities and develop recommendations to inform capability decisions
- Support planning, coordination and execution of technical investigations, risk reduction activities, demonstrations, trials and evaluations
- Develop technical assessments, briefing material, decision support products and stakeholder engagement artefacts
- Engage with stakeholders across Defence, industry and international partners to support alignment of capability requirements and technical approaches
- Contribute to development and maintenance of system architectures, standards, integration guidance and design products
- Participate in communications and systems engineering working groups, forums and governance activities
- Review contractor deliverables and provide technical advice on suitability, maturity and alignment with requirements, standards and architectural principles
- Support assurance, governance, audit and reporting activities associated with capability development and integration initiatives
- Provide technical support across the wider team as required
Required
- Current NV1 security clearance
- Demonstrated experience in Defence communications, networking, ICT or systems engineering roles
- Knowledge of communications, networking and related technologies
- Experience developing or reviewing technical documentation, requirements or engineering assessments
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Ability to analyse technical risks, issues and integration challenges
- Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in communications, telecommunications, ICT or systems engineering
- Knowledge of the Defence Capability Lifecycle and Defence governance processes highly regarded
- Experience supporting capability development, acquisition,
integration or sustainment activities highly regarded
- Understanding of communications systems, networks and architectures highly regarded
- Experience supporting trials, demonstrations, evaluations or risk reduction activities highly regarded
- Familiarity with systems engineering methods, standards and architecture development highly regarded
- Degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, ICT, Computer Science, Systems Engineering or a related discipline highly regarded
