The Role
We're looking for an experienced Design and Strategy Support professional to join a Defence capability program in Canberra. You'll support program leadership across design and strategic planning, working closely with capability development, delivery and sustainment leads to assess and interpret strategic direction and, where possible, help influence it.
You'll build relationships with the areas responsible for strategic advice, and prepare information that helps leadership understand the impact of changing strategic guidance on program capabilities. A key part of the role is understanding, defining and monitoring dependencies between the program and other Defence projects. You may also be asked to chair governance meetings, prepare executive-level briefs, present project status updates, support Gate Reviews and advise senior Defence leadership and Commonwealth officials.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and maintaining the program strategy and associated strategic and operational planning products
- Support program leadership in developing concepts of operation, concepts of employment, integrated capability directives and inputs to Defence operational and design documentation
- Provide specialised design and strategic analysis expertise to support informed decision-making and capability planning
- Support the review and coordination of capability planning documentation and dependencies, ensuring coherence between integrated objectives, capability delivery and organisational priorities
- Support leadership in assessing and responding to evolving strategic guidance, strengthening alignment between program capabilities and future design priorities
- Establish relationships with key areas responsible for developing strategic advice
- Understand, define and monitor dependencies between the program and other Defence projects
- Attend and participate in governance activities, including weekly team meetings, monthly Project Board, Program Board or Integrated Project Team meetings, risk, issue and dependency reviews, and stakeholder engagement meetings
- Provide accurate status updates, action item reports, risk assessments, briefing material and meeting inputs as requested
Required
- Current NV1 security clearance
- Demonstrated experience in Defence programs, design or concept development roles
- Solid understanding of communications and information systems
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office, databases and information systems, and good knowledge of MS Project
- Excellent organisational and leadership skills
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities
- Sound stakeholder management skills, including the ability to interpret technical information from stakeholders
- Technical writing skills for complex systems
- Project management experience within a Defence context, including application of project management methodology, highly regarded
- Additional skills in project/program management, systems engineering,
communications, business management or information technology highly regarded, particularly for translating user needs, participating in vendor-led discussions and developing schedule, cost and quality analysis for acquisition and sustainment investment decisions
- Understanding of staff processes within operational headquarters highly regarded
- Knowledge or experience working in the Defence Capability Lifecycle process, governance structures and committee processes highly regarded
