Looking for something a little different from conventional optometry?
Special Eyes Vision Services is looking for an optometrist to join our small and growing practice in Brisbane North.
This is a part-time role, approximately 2–3 days per week, with flexibility around days and working hours. Hours can potentially be structured around school drop-off and pick-up.
We work with children and adults with disability, cerebral visual impairment (CVI) and low vision, including people who may find a conventional eye examination difficult or impossible.
This is not high-volume optometry. Our appointments are longer, the pace is deliberately slower, and assessments are adapted around the individual rather than attempting to get the individual to adapt to the eye examination.
The role will include:
- Comprehensive eye examinations for children and adults with disability
- Adapting assessment techniques when conventional testing isn't possible
- Functional vision assessment
- Preparation of NDIS functional vision reports
- Assessment of cerebral visual impairment (CVI)
- Holistic assessment and management of low vision
- Assessment for magnification and other assistive technology, including bioptic telescopes
- Spectacle prescribing and dispensing
- Working collaboratively with families, carers, therapists, teachers and other health professionals
Who are we looking for?
You don't need previous experience in disability, CVI or low vision.
Full training, mentoring and ongoing support will be provided.
We're not necessarily looking for someone who already has the right skill set. We're looking for someone with the right approach who wants to learn it.
You may be a good fit if you are:
- Patient and curious
- A flexible thinker and positive problem solver
- Comfortable doing things differently when conventional testing doesn't work
- Interested in how vision affects everyday function
- Kind and respectful in your approach to people with disability and their families
- Interested in developing skills beyond conventional community optometry
New graduates are encouraged to apply.
We welcome applications from optometrists at different stages of their careers. New graduates are very welcome to apply, and final-year optometry students who will be eligible for registration before commencing employment are also encouraged to get in touch.
Applicants will need to hold general registration as an optometrist with the Optometry Board of Australia before commencing clinical practice.
If you're looking for a role where you can think creatively and develop a very different set of optometry skills, we'd love to hear from you.
