We follow the journey of a Seeing Eye Dog from their breeding and initial development as puppies, through their advanced training to ensure they can safely guide their future partners, to matching them with a client and finally ending with their happy retirement after eight years of dedicated service.

About The Opportunity

As our Senior Seeing Eye Dog Trainer, you will provide technical expertise and mentoring, in addition to assessing and training Seeing Eye Dogs, in accordance with International Guide Dog Federation standards and the standards, policies, procedures and values set by Vision Australia, and to contribute to the successful operation of Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs (VA SED). In this role you will also:

- Assess dogs’ suitability and train selected dogs to matching standards.
- Support Seeing Eye Dog Mobility Instructors to identify the most suitable match for each dog and client.
- Train, coach and support Trainee SED Trainers, as required.
- Provide subject matter expert advice and informal mentoring and coaching on SED dog training and behaviour, while modelling best practice.

About You





- Qualified as a Guide Dog Trainer, with at least five years of postgraduate experience as a Guide Dog Trainer.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including walking approximately 12 kilometres per day in all weather conditions and handling young, active dogs.
- Advanced knowledge of dog behaviour, contemporary dog training methodologies, learning theory and animal welfare.
- Ability to provide expert guidance on training plans and assessments.
