About the Role
This is a contractor role open to candidates based in Australia.
You'll join a mobile engineering squad at one of Australia's largest banks, working on two priority projects: making the Android app resilient when backend services go down, and building Open Banking features that let customers link accounts from other banks.
The core of the work is an offline-first architecture. When backend APIs slow down or fail, the app keeps working instead of freezing or showing an empty screen. You'll build it in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose with a SQLite persistence layer, using networking and database code generated from gRPC definitions. Millions of customers use this app.
The contract runs 6 to 8 months. Expect the first 2 to 4 weeks onsite in Melbourne, to get context and share knowledge with the team.
Most Key
5+ years of senior native Android engineering, with expert Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
Production experience building offline-first apps with SQLite, including local caching, schema migrations, and thread-protected data synchronization
Kotlin Coroutines and Flow, used to keep UI rendering separate from background network work
Hands-on experience with gRPC, Protocol Buffers,
and automated code generation on Android
Clean Architecture, MVVM or MVI, and dependency injection with Hilt or Dagger
Android security fundamentals: Android Keystore or EncryptedSharedPreferences, certificate pinning, and OAuth2
Able to work onsite in Melbourne for the first 2 to 4 weeks
Nice to Have
Experience building or using code-generation tools that map API definitions to SQLite schemas and DAO interfaces
LaunchDarkly or similar feature flagging, for staged rollouts and instant kill-switches
Working knowledge of iOS patterns (Swift and SwiftUI), so you can keep behavior consistent with the iOS squad
FinTech background: financial dashboards, Open Banking (Consumer Data Right) flows, or retail banking apps
Personal Traits
You prefer strongly typed contracts over loose JSON, and you like it when tooling generates the boilerplate for you.
You treat security and penetration test findings as part of the build, not a review at the end.
You share context easily, with a current team onsite in the first weeks and with iOS colleagues after that.
