LEAD AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN / CAMPERVAN BUILDER – OPERATIONS MANAGER PATHWAY
$40–$50 per hour | ABN contractor | Immediate project start
Tyagarah, NSW – on-site
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Byron Bay Van Fitouts is seeking a qualified, senior automotive technician or mechanic to take technical ownership of mechanical work across our custom campervan projects.
This is a mechanic-first role. Strong campervan building, fabrication, 12V, carpentry or cabinetry skills are highly valued, but you do not need experience in every area.
We need someone experienced, dependable and consistent who communicates well, works safely, solves problems and leads by example. The right person will be interested in building a long-term working relationship and helping us improve workshop systems as the company grows.
THE WORK
Diagnose, service and repair vans and light vehicles
Complete mechanical inspections, fault-finding and quality checks
Install vehicle accessories and complete 12V work within your qualifications and competency
Assist with campervan fabrication, fit-out, cabinetry and finishing where experienced
Plan project stages, identify parts and materials, and communicate progress clearly
Maintain high standards of safety, workmanship and workshop organisation
Help guide other tradespeople and improve workflow, quality control and operations
WHAT YOU MUST HAVE
A relevant automotive trade qualification recognised in Australia
A current NSW Motor Vehicle Tradesperson Certificate for the work performed, plus any other licences required for the contracting arrangement
Solid post-trade mechanical and diagnostic experience
An active ABN and appropriate contractor insurance
Your own suitable tools and reliable transport
Existing Australian work rights; sponsorship is not available for this contractor position
The ability to work independently, communicate professionally and reliably complete agreed projects
Residence within practical commuting distance of Byron Bay, or a confirmed ability to relocate before starting
An intention to work with us for at least 12 months if the projects and working relationship are mutually suitable
HIGHLY REGARDED
Workshop foreman, leading hand, service manager or team-lead experience
Campervan, caravan, motorhome or 4WD accessory experience
Welding, metal fabrication or vehicle body-building experience
Automotive electrical, 12V, solar or battery-system experience
Carpentry, cabinetmaking or joinery skills
Experience with quoting, scheduling, purchasing, stock control or workshop operations
RATE AND ENGAGEMENT
$40–$50 per hour, depending on capability and experience
Invoiced through an active ABN; GST applies where required
A continuing pipeline of work is available for the right person, subject to project demand and mutual fit
Contractors remain free to perform services for other clients, subject to agreed project commitments
LEADERSHIP PATHWAY
The first priority is strong, hands‐on technical performance.
After at least six months of consistently high-quality work, reliability, communication and demonstrated leadership, the right person may be considered for a broader Workshop, Team Lead or Operations Manager position as the company grows. Progression is performance-based and is not automatic.
Be careful - Don't provide your bank or credit card details when applying for jobs. Don't transfer any money or complete suspicious online surveys. If you see something suspicious, report this job ad.
