D'Arcy Weil is recruiting a Senior Employment Counsel on behalf of a major Australian bank. The Sydney-based role sits within the employment law group, supporting every business division on workforce matters across litigation, regulatory engagement, benefits, mobility, compensation, restructuring and transactions, including:
- Managing employment proceedings and regulatory matters, directing external advisors and bringing HR, business and leadership teams to defensible, commercially sound outcomes
- Drafting employment agreements, exit arrangements, workplace policies and internal communications that non-lawyers can read and apply
- Advising on workplace complaint investigations and escalated matters, so that process and outcomes are fair and defensible
- Counselling the people function on pay frameworks, performance processes, organisational change, acquisitions and divestments
- Tracking employment law and regulatory change and turning new obligations into practical workforce policy
- Designing and running employment law training for managers and HR professionals
The work is broad and consequential: protecting the bank's position and enabling sound workforce decisions across a large, geographically dispersed workforce.
The Role
- Manage employment-related proceedings and regulatory matters, directing external advisors and aligning HR, business management and leadership around well-governed, commercially sound resolutions
- Draft employment agreements, exit arrangements, workplace policies and internal communications that are legally sound and accessible to non-legal readers
- Guide internal processes on workplace complaints and escalated matters, advising on procedure and making sure outcomes are fair and defensible
- Counsel the people function across pay frameworks,
performance processes, workforce change, acquisitions and divestments
- Track employment law and regulatory developments in each relevant jurisdiction, converting new obligations into actionable changes to workforce practices
- Design and deliver employment law education for managers and HR professionals, lifting legal awareness and risk management across the business
- Work with legal, compliance, tax and compensation colleagues to apply consistent standards to all people-related matters
About You
- 8+ years PQE in employment law, with substantial litigation experience from private practice or a large multinational
- Excellent drafting and communication across legal advice, management guidance and broad internal communications
- Strong project management, with a record of driving complex, cross-functional initiatives to completion
- Skilled at building relationships across diverse, geographically distributed teams
- Composed and decisive under pressure, with the commercial judgement and conviction to defend the bank's position when it counts
