About the Department
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) safeguards the integrity of Australia's electoral system. Alongside delivering federal elections, the AEC has a growing role as a national regulator of political funding and disclosure. The Electoral Legislation Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 2025 came into effect on 1 July 2026, the most significant change to Australia's electoral laws in 40 years, and the AEC's Regulatory Division is expanding to deliver it. You'll join the Disclosure and Compliance section, which delivers compliance reviews and investigations that are transparent, defensible and built to withstand external scrutiny.
About the Roles
The AEC is seeking 2 x APS5 Compliance Officers and 3 x APS6 Senior Compliance Officers to review financial disclosure returns and election funding claims, ensuring they're accurate, complete and compliant with Part XX of the Commonwealth Electoral Act. APS5 officers work under general supervision. APS6 officers work independently under limited direction and provide guidance to junior staff.
Salary: APS5 $88,834 - $96,848 | APS6 $99,734 - $111,701, plus 15.4% superannuation.
Formal qualifications or work experience in accounting, commerce, finance or a related field is highly desirable.
Key Duties
- Review financial disclosure returns from registered political parties, associated entities, third parties and other participants for accuracy, completeness and legislative compliance
- Assess claims for election funding and undertake related reviews and enquiries
- Support the accurate processing and payment of election funding to eligible parties and candidates
- APS6: independently conduct complex compliance assessments across the electoral cycle
- APS6: oversee and coordinate election funding payments in line with legislative and procedural obligations
- APS6:
lead information gathering and analysis to identify potential non-compliance, including risks of foreign influence through financial contributions, and provide guidance to junior staff
Key Skills and Capabilities
- Experience supporting or leading financial audits, quality assurance or similar compliance-based work, with a methodical and accurate approach
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex information, identify issues and provide timely, well-reasoned advice
- Robust communication and collaboration skills, including engaging confidently with internal stakeholders and external scheme participants
- Ability to manage your workload, prioritise effectively and deliver quality work within tight timeframes
- Flexibility and adaptability as the AEC implements major legislative change
- APS6: demonstrated ability to lead by example and support the development of others
Eligibility
All AEC employees must be Australian citizens. The AEC is strictly politically neutral, and anyone active in political affairs or referendum issues will be ineligible for these roles.
