About Us:

Wallis Drilling provides a diverse range of drilling services for exploration and mining projects. But we do more than just operate drill rigs: we manufacture them. We take pride in building some of the most innovative semi-autonomous drill rigs and support equipment in the industry.

The Job:

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team, supporting the design, integration and delivery of battery-electric and hybrid drill rig systems. You will play a key role in developing subsystem architecture and supporting the integration of electrical and electronic systems into Wallis' drilling equipment, working closely with mechanical and mechatronic engineers to deliver safe, reliable and compliant electrification solutions.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Develop subsystem architecture for battery-electric or hybrid drill rigs.

- Support selection and integration of traction or auxiliary electric motors.

- Integrate battery packs, battery-management systems, inverters, chargers and DC/DC converters.

- Define low-voltage and high-voltage interface requirements.

- Liaise with mechanical and mechatronic engineers on integration points.

- Develop charging requirements and charging-interface specifications.

- Support design of high-voltage interlocks, isolation monitoring, emergency shutdown and pre-charge systems.

- Undertake component and supplier evaluation for electrification retrofits.

- Analyse CAN data from batteries, chargers, motor controllers and machine systems.

- Assist with thermal-management and derating strategies.

- Assist with hazard analysis covering electric shock, arc energy, battery thermal events and stored energy.

- Assist with site/factory verification and validation testing and fault finding.

- Contribute to compliance documentation (ADR 109, AS 5732 for BEV drill rigs, WHS electrical safety).

The Candidate:

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

- Approximately two or more years’ relevant experience.

- Demonstrated electrical design and commissioning experience.

- Robust analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail

- Demonstrated experience with AutoCAD Electrical or an equivalent package.

- Ability to perform calculations and prepare design documentation with limited supervision.

- Strong troubleshooting and stakeholder-communication skills.

The following would be highly desirable:

- Exposure to EV charging infrastructure and associated electrical systems

- Understanding of CAN bus, J1939, Modbus or industrial Ethernet.

- Familiarity with electric vehicle design and mechanics, including heavy vehicles, mining machinery, drilling equipment

- Confidence navigating standards such as AS3000, AS3008 and UN38, and comfortable using design and calculation software to perform calculations.

- PLC/HMI programming capability.

If working at the intersection of mobile industrial machinery, fluid power and modern tech sounds interesting, please submit your cover letter and CV via the ‘apply now’ button.
