Bicycle Network
Melbourne
At Bicycle Network, we’re determined to change the world and our job isn’t an easy one. It takes a willingness to embrace uncertainty and tackle new challenges with enthusiasm. You’ve got to be a team player who genuinely wants to make the world a better place.
We always want to hear from people who are passionate about what we do.
If our friends described us and they said the following four things, we’d be rapt:
We take on challenges with integrity and determination to create meaningful change.
Respect
We build trust through respectful and transparent communication.
Inclusive
We welcome all those who align with our vision and share our passion.
We shape and embrace change.
Why work with us?
Heaps of annual leave
We all need a break at times – that’s why we offer 6 weeks annual leave and free international travel insurance for you and your family.
Paid parental leave
We offer 8 weeks of paid leave for all new parents. Bicycle Network is one big family, so we welcome yours.
Helping you ride
We’re all about making it easy for people to get active, so we practice what we preach. Our office has next level end-of-trip facilities, salary packaging for bikes and a program to help celebrate every time you ride, walk or run to work.
We know that what for the job done yesterday won’t cut it today so we have dedicated personal development time each month and regular in-house training sessions for the whole team.
Making an impact
There are a few days each year where we ask everyone to get outside of the office and help out – we call them our big bike days. You’ll find yourself in an Australian community amongst bike riders and working closely with your teammates. This is where the magic happens!
Social events
Drinks are on us! We huddle together every month to play games, welcome newcomers, and celebrate work anniversaries and team achievements.
Our preference is to appoint one highly experienced full time COO with the breadth to lead the complete portfolio.
We are open to appointing either one full time Chief Operating Officer or splitting the position into two complementary part‑time roles:
- Four days per week leading strategy, operations, events, commercial, customer experience and community engagement
- Two days per week leading the CFO portfolio, including finance, Board, governance, risk and People and Culture
We are looking for the strongest combination of experience and capability. This is a hands‑on executive opportunity for people who enjoy pace, variety and being close to the work – turning strategy into strong commercial, operational, customer and community outcomes.
You’ll work closely with our CEO, Executive Leadership Team and Board to strengthen performance, grow participation, diversify revenue and create exceptional experiences. Most importantly, you’ll help us achieve our purpose: more people riding more often to improve their health and wellbeing.
If you’re passionate about our mission and this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
Reporting to the CEO, you will be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and lead governance, management systems and organisational performance. You will work closely with the Board and your leadership colleagues, enabling the CEO to focus increasingly on public affairs, advocacy, partnerships and external relationships.
Your priorities will include:
- Lead strategic planning and the ongoing development of Bicycle Network’s strategy with the CEO, Leadership Team and Board.
- Support and challenge senior leaders to pursue stretch targets, exceed budgets and build a sustainable annual surplus.
- Build and maintain a sustainable three‑year financial and operating model, supported by strategic reporting on financial performance, impact and reach.
Customer, Events & Participation
- Build a clear understanding of members, riders, participants and customers, and use that insight to improve experience, reach and impact.
- Build and strengthen events through continuous improvement and an uncompromising customer‑first approach, with major events planned well in advance and embedded positively in host communities.
- Transform community engagement through capacity, building programs that create greater, lasting and scalable behaviour change.
- Provide leadership and support to diversify revenue beyond ticket sales through sponsorship, government investment, fundraising, membership, contracts and new commercial opportunities.
People, Culture & Capacity
- Partner with the GM People and Culture to strengthen structures, performance management, policies, capability and development pathways.
Governance, systems and Transformation
- Drive digital transformation and better use of systems, data, artificial intelligence and emerging technology to improve efficiency, performance and reach.
- Support the Board and its subcommittees,
lead effective strategy days and create an environment that welcomes open conversation, questions and curiosity.
We are looking for someone who brings
You will be a senior and experienced executive who combines strategic judgement with commercial acumen, strong financial literacy and an eye for operational detail. You will be energised by Bicycle Network’s purpose and motivated by the opportunity to improve people’s health and wellbeing.
You will ideally bring:
- Substantial experience leading complex, multidisciplinary functions and organisational change.
- Demonstrated commercial success across revenue growth, business development, contracts and performance against stretch targets.
- A record of creating exceptional customer experiences and using customer and member insight to improve performance.
- Experience leading major events, complex programs or comparable customer‑facing operations.
- Robust capability in budgeting, forecasting, governance, risk, Board reporting and long‑term financial planning.
- Experience leading digital transformation and using data to improve decisions, customer outcomes and organisational impact.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent senior executive experience. A CA, CPA or comparable qualification would be highly regarded for the finance‑focused portfolio.
Why join us?
You will have the opportunity to:
- Shape the future direction of a purpose‑led national organisation.
- Work closely with the CEO, Board and Executive Leadership Team.
- Influence strategy while staying close to operational delivery.
- Lead meaningful organisational and commercial transformation.
- Help create healthier, more connected communities through more people riding more often.
