Van der Meer Consulting Group Pty Limited is an Australian engineering consultancy providing structural and civil engineering design and drafting services across commercial, residential, education, health, retail, industrial, government, infrastructure, temporary works, staging and events projects.
Our services include structural engineering, civil engineering, infrastructure and land development, temporary works, shop detailing, and BIM/drafting. We work collaboratively across engineering and drafting teams to deliver accurate, coordinated and practical project documentation.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Structural Draftsperson to join our structural engineering and drafting team on a full-time basis. The successful applicant will prepare and revise detailed structural and civil engineering drawings, Revit models and BIM-based documentation under the direction of Structural Engineers and Senior Draftspersons. The role involves interpreting engineering sketches, mark-ups, specifications, survey information and other project data and converting this information into accurate technical drawings and documentation. The position will also assist with multidisciplinary coordination, drawing revisions, quality checks and document control to ensure drafting outputs comply with project requirements, relevant Australian Standards and Van der Meer drafting procedures.
The Tasks for the position include:
- Prepare detailed digital drawings, plans, layouts, sections, details and structural engineering works, including building structures, foundations, slabs, retaining walls, bridges, civil infrastructure interfaces, access layouts and other related works using Revit. Drawing deliverables are issued in PDF format, CAD and 3D Revit and .ifc files where required.
- Develop and revise Revit models and drawing documentation by interpreting engineering sketches, mark-ups, calculations, specifications, survey information, verified site data and work assignment instructions,
and convert this information into accurate digital drawings and technical documentation using Revit and relevant BIM systems.
- Prepare and compile drawing packages, plans, profiles, sections, schedules and details for allocated structural engineering projects in accordance with project requirements and Van der Meer structural drafting procedures.
- Interpret architectural, structural, civil, hydraulic, fire, facade, geotechnical, survey and services information to coordinate drafting outputs across disciplines and identify potential clashes or discrepancies.
- Collect, organise and analyse project information, including dimensions, levels, grids, set-outs, existing conditions and consultant inputs, and carry out basic drafting computations required for accurate drawing preparation.
Key Responsibilities
The Tasks for the position include:
- Incorporate approved engineering mark-ups, client or consultant comments, regulatory requirements, construction updates and verified site information into revised drawings and controlled document issues.
- Check drawings for consistency with approved designs, project specifications, Australian Standards, relevant regulations, contract provisions and Van der Meer quality requirements before internal review or issue.
- Maintain accurate drawing registers, revision histories, transmittals, file naming conventions, issue records, checklists, archiving and electronic project documentation in accordance with company document-control procedures.
- Communicate regularly with Clients, Senior Draftspersons and Structural Engineers regarding project progress, drafting issues, coordination matters and information requirements. Provide relevant drafting information and queries to engineers, who manage communication with clients and external stakeholders.
- Identify missing information, drafting discrepancies, coordination issues and potential health and safety hazards, and refer engineering design decisions, calculations,
certification and technical approvals to qualified professionals.
- Comply with workplace health and safety, confidentiality, quality assurance, professional conduct and company procedural requirements.
- Skill & Experience
The Tasks for the position include:
- Participate in ongoing professional development by maintaining awareness of legislative changes, Australian Standards, drafting practices and current or future issues affecting civil and structural engineering projects.
Skill Requirements
- Diploma, Advanced Diploma or equivalent qualification in civil engineering drafting, structural drafting, engineering design, construction design or a related field.
- Minimum 1 year experience as a Structural Draftsperson in civil or structural drafting, preferably within an engineering consultancy, building, infrastructure or construction project environment.
- Strong proficiency in Revit and BIM-based drafting workflows, with working knowledge of CAD software.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare structural drawings, plans, layouts, sections, details, schedules and drawing packages from engineering sketches, mark-ups, specifications, survey data and project information.
- Experience interpreting and coordinating architectural, structural, civil and other consultant documentation.
- Sound knowledge of relevant Australian Standards, regulations and engineering documentation practices applicable to structural and civil drafting.
- Strong attention to detail and experience maintaining accurate drawing revisions, registers, transmittals and electronic project records.
- Good analytical and numeracy skills, including the ability to interpret dimensions, levels, grids, set-outs and other technical project information.
- Solid organisation, time-management and communication skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and work collaboratively with Structural Engineers, Senior Draftspersons and other project team members.
- Ability to follow established drafting and quality procedures, respond to technical feedback and work effectively within a professional engineering consultancy setting.
