About the roles
SES Band 2 officers are accountable for leading a major division. They operate with a high degree of autonomy, provide strategic leadership and stewardship across organisational boundaries, and contribute to the collective leadership of the department and the broader Australian Public Service.
Depending on the role, you may lead multiple branches, senior executives and multidisciplinary workforces, deploy very substantial people and financial resources, and be accountable for outcomes with significant departmental, economic or public impact. You will set strategic direction, translate government priorities into an integrated program of delivery, lead transformation, manage uncertainty and major risk, and build enduring organisational capability.
You will provide authoritative, evidence-based advice to ministers,
the Secretary and senior leaders; shape departmental and whole-of-government direction; lead responses to highly complex and sensitive issues; and represent the department in significant negotiations and engagements with senior stakeholders across government, industry, academia and the community. Your duties will include:
- set strategic direction and lead the delivery of government, departmental and enterprise priorities
- provide influential, timely and evidence-based advice on complex, sensitive and high-impact matters
- build trusted relationships, negotiate effectively and influence outcomes across government, industry and the community
- lead through managers, develop high-performing and inclusive teams, and create clear accountability for delivery
- exercise sound judgement in deploying resources and managing ambiguity, significant risk, governance and competing priorities
- contribute to enterprise leadership, APS stewardship and the department’s long-term capability and institutional knowledge.
Our ideal candidates
Our ideal candidates will be accomplished and adaptable senior leaders who can operate with integrity, judgement and influence in complex environments and deliver outcomes of strategic importance.
You will demonstrate the breadth and depth of leadership expected at SES Band 2, including enterprise thinking, delivery through senior leaders, influence across complex systems, personal drive and integrity, and stewardship of whole-of-department and APS outcomes.
You will demonstrate:
- a record of leading a major division,
enterprise function, portfolio or system of work and achieving outcomes of substantial strategic importance
- the ability to operate with substantial autonomy, set strategic direction, translate priorities into delivery and lead change in ambiguous environments
- sound judgement and the ability to provide explicit, persuasive and evidence-based advice on complex, sensitive and high-impact issues
- the ability to build trust, negotiate and influence departmental, whole-of-government and external outcomes
- strong people leadership, including leading through managers and fostering inclusive, accountable and high-performing workplaces
- effective stewardship of substantial resources, risk, governance, capability and organisational knowledge
- strong communication and representational skills, including the ability to represent the department with senior and diverse audiences
- exemplary integrity and behaviours consistent with the APS Values, Employment Principles and Code of Conduct.
Eligibility
To be eligible for these employment opportunities, you must be an Australian citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance.
