Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you’re probably keen to find out what’s on offer, so we’ll get straight to the point.
n
Where and how you can work
n
Our flagship Sydney campus is uniquely Canva – an extension of our Surry Hills neighbourhood. It’s a thoughtfully designed space with plenty of room to collaborate, focus, and connect. This role is based in Sydney, and we’re looking for someone who calls it home. Our hybrid way of working gives you the flexibility to work remotely, and to come together on campus for meaningful in-person collaboration and connection when it matters most. We trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.
n
What you’d be doing in this role
n
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that’s all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you’ll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
n
At the moment, this role is focused on:
n
Building MCP connectors and tool integrations that give a team of AI agents two-way access to the platforms our country specialists use today – analytics, SEO, search console, content tools, marketing platforms, and our internal data warehouse.
n
Building the data pipelines that surface real-time market data (performance metrics, product usage, conversion funnels, content engagement) into a queryable layer the agents can act on.
n
Designing, building, and evaluating the skills that agents execute: reusable blueprints for work cycles like SEO analysis, content production, localisation QA, and market reporting.
n
Partnering directly with a Country Manager to iterate on agent performance against real MAU and ARR outcomes in-market, and tightening the feedback loop between human direction and agent output.
n
Replacing manual processes with live tooling as the harness comes online, so the team is shipping into a real market from week one.
n
Documenting the harness, skills,
and evaluation framework so the model is repeatable as we deploy to additional markets.
n
You’re probably a match if
n
You are firmly grounded in computer science and engineering fundamentals and have experience developing web applications.
n
You have hands‑on experience managing cloud platform configurations, preferably in AWS (with Azure or GCP as a bonus).
n
You have experience working with infrastructure for system integration – APIs, webhooks, event pipelines, and ideally MCP.
n
You bring 7–10+ years of experience in system engineering, system architecture, applied AI engineering, or an equivalent technical role.
n
You have hands‑on experience building or evaluating LLM‑based agents, tools, or skills – or strong engineering fundamentals and a clear appetite to go deep on agent architecture quickly.
n
You are comfortable working close to the metric: shipping into a live operation and iterating on what real market data tells you.
n
You communicate effectively and confidently, both verbal and written forms.
n
You have hands‑on experience using AI in your work to drive greater impact.
n
About the team
n
The AI Country Team is a brand new team with a simple objective: accelerate Canva’s growth in international markets. We’re doing it by pairing a Country Manager with a team of AI engineers who build the tools needed to succeed in specialist domains: SEO, content, marketing, product, localisation.
n
This is a small founding team tackling a wide‑open problem space. There are no established playbooks yet, giving early hires the prospect to shape the team’s direction, define how the work gets done, and build solutions from the ground up. If you thrive in ambiguity and enjoy creating impact from day one, this role is for you.
n
As a Staff AI Systems Engineer, you’ll sit at the centre of the build. You’ll own the wiring between Canva’s internal systems, third‑party platforms, and the agents that act on them. You’ll be hands‑on building and evaluating the skills those agents run.
n
What’s in it for you?
n
Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard – and we do – but you’ll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a range of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work.
n
Here’s a taste of what’s on offer:
n
Equity packages – we want our success to be yours too
n
Inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents & carers
n
An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support your wellbeing, social connection, office setup & more
n
Flexible leave options that empower you to be a force for good, take time to recharge and supports you personally

n
Other stuff to know
n
We see AI as a powerful amplifier of creativity and technology at Canva. We’re evolving how we assess AI skills in our Technology hiring experience – you’ll tackle interactive, real‑time challenges that reflect the kind of work we do. In some interviews, you may also be asked to solve a problem using an AI tool to show how you approach challenges with tech by your side. Your recruitment partner will walk you through what to expect.
n
We make hiring decisions based on your experience, skills and passion, as well as how you can enhance Canva and our culture. When you apply, please tell us the pronouns you use and any reasonable adjustments you may need during the interview process.
n
We celebrate all types of skills and backgrounds at Canva so even if you don’t feel like your skills quite match what’s listed above – we still want to hear from you!
n
Fetch is how modern pet parents give their pets the best care. One pink app for insurance, health and care.
n
We’ve raised our Series A from Lightspeed and Airtree, we’re rated 4.9+ on Google, #1 by CHOICE, and we’re growing fast.
n
We think AI is going to fundamentally change how we care for pets.
n
We have pet health data, an in‑house team of vets and vet nurses, and we build our own product and technology. We want to turn that into an intelligence layer that understands each pet deeply – their history, health and what might matter next.
n
We’re looking for an exceptional Lead Applied AI Engineer to build it.
n
The role
n
This is a senior, hands‑on builder role.
n
You’ll lead applied AI at Fetch – setting the direction, choosing the models and approaches, building them yourself, measuring whether they actually work, and shipping them into real products.
n
Your core job is simple:
make Fetch exceptionally good at understanding pet health.
n
That capability will power everything from helping pet parents care for their pets, to supporting vets, interpreting health records and automating parts of insurance.
n
We don’t need someone with a particular academic pedigree. We want someone who is obsessed with what modern models can do, moves quickly, experiments constantly and knows how to turn new capabilities into reliable products.
n
Location: Sydney, hybrid, 3 days in office
n
Employment type: Full time
n
Compensation: Series A salary + meaningful equity
n
Working with: Co‑founders, engineering, product, data, vets and vet nurses. We’re flat, fast and care about the best idea.
n
What you’ll build and own
n
Fetch’s pet health intelligence layer: models and systems that can understand messy, longitudinal pet health information and reason over it
n
Model quality end‑to‑end: datasets, evals, model selection, prompting, retrieval, post‑training, fine‑tuning, guardrails and monitoring
n
A serious evaluation system: clear benchmarks for what good looks like, where models fail and whether a new model is actually better
n
Domain‑specific AI: turning proprietary pet health data and expert veterinary knowledge into capabilities generic models don’t have
n
Multimodal understanding: health records, documents, images and, over time, richer inputs like video
n
Safe production AI: working closely with our vets, compliance and engineering teams to make sure the systems we ship are reliable and clinically appropriate
n
The next generation of Fetch products: you’ll be deeply involved in product direction and help decide what we should build with AI, not simply implement someone else’s roadmap
n
The beginnings of an exceptional AI team: this is a core capability for Fetch and we expect the team around it to grow
n
You’ll use whichever approach works best.
n
Sometimes that will mean a frontier closed‑source model. Sometimes an open‑source model. Sometimes RAG, tools or better context. Sometimes fine‑tuning or post‑training.
n
We care about getting to the best result, measuring it properly and improving it quickly.
n
About you
n
You’re an exceptional applied AI builder who wants a lot of ownership.
n
You’ve probably spent the last few years building with up-to-date ML and LLMs and have gone much deeper than plugging an API into a product.
n
This might look like:
n
3+ years building and shipping ML or AI systems in production
n
Strong experience with modern LLMs and applied AI systems
n
Deep understanding of evals – how to construct them, measure model quality and use failures to drive improvement
n
Experience with post‑training, fine‑tuning, RAG, structured outputs, tool use or similar techniques
n
Strong instincts around training data – what data matters, how to structure it and how to improve its quality
n
Enough engineering ability to take an idea from experiment to production
n
Good judgement about when to use a frontier model, an open‑source model, retrieval, fine‑tuning or something simpler
n
Strong product thinking – you care what the system enables for the user, not just the benchmark score
n
Comfortable working directly with domain experts to turn human expertise into data, evals and model behaviour
n
Experience in health, veterinary care or insurance is useful. It isn’t required.
n
A PhD isn’t required either. We care much more about what you’ve built, how you think and how quickly you learn.
n
You’ll probably love this role if:
n
You’re all in on AI and believe it can make the world meaningfully better
n
A new model drops and your first instinct is to try it
n
You’re optimistic about where the technology is going and curious about what becomes possible next
n
You’re empirical – you test things rather than argue about them in theory
n
You move quickly and like turning experiments into real products
n
You’re brave enough to try approaches that might fail
n
You want a huge amount of influence over product and technical direction
n
You want to build the capability yourself before building a team around it
n
You like working with very smart people from different disciplines
n
You probably won’t love this role if:
n
You want to spend most of your time managing rather than building
n
You need a research paper before you’re comfortable trying something
n
You think your job ends when a model works in a notebook
n
You’re attached to one model, vendor or technical approach
n
You prefer long research cycles over shipping, measuring and iterating
n
You need a defined roadmap handed to you
n
You want everyone to stay neatly inside their lane
n
What it’s like here
n
The Fetch team is ambitious, smart, hard‑working, thoughtful and kind.
n
You’ll work directly with the founders and be involved early in prod
