In this critical hands-on technical role, you will be responsible for upgrading legacy radio networks at overseas and remote sites to ensure emergency communications remain reliable, secure, and fit for purpose. You will leverage your deep practical expertise in radio communication engineering, RF design, microwave systems optimization, satellite communications, and hardware calibration to execute complex field deployments. This chance offers a 12-month contract with two 12-month extension options, requiring an active NV2 security clearance (PV preferred) and a willingness to travel regularly to remote and international locations.
Detailed Job Description
As a Senior RF & Microwave Infrastructure Technician supporting federal government emergency communications in Canberra, you will take full technical and operational ownership of radio network upgrades, field installations, and fault resolution. Your day-to-day responsibilities include designing, installing, tuning, calibrating, and troubleshooting complex radio frequency (RF), microwave, and satellite communications (SATCOM) systems. You will collaborate closely with government stakeholders, engineering teams, and project managers while producing robust technical documentation, including High-Level Designs (HLDs) and comprehensive maintenance plans. Furthermore, you will undertake regular domestic and international travel to remote and overseas Australian government sites to execute deployment operations, provide technical support, and ensure mission-critical uptime.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead hands-on design, installation, tuning, calibration, and fault resolution across complex RF, microwave, and satellite communication systems.
- Execute legacy radio network upgrades and modernization projects for federal government emergency communications infrastructure.
- Undertake regular travel to remote domestic and overseas international locations for field deployments, hardware staging, and technical support.
- Author and maintain rigorous technical documentation, including High-Level Designs (HLDs), low-level architectures, and maintenance plans.
- Perform antenna alignment, RF path testing, spectrum analysis, and performance optimization across diverse frequency bands.
- Collaborate seamlessly with government stakeholders, project managers, and cross-functional technical teams.
- Ensure strict adherence to government security protocols, safety standards, and operational compliance requirements.
- Provide expert-level technical troubleshooting and rapid incident response for mission-critical communication networks.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Communications, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 5+ years of professional hands‑on experience in radio communication engineering and RF infrastructure.
- Strong practical knowledge of RF and microwave systems, including design, testing, optimization, and hardware calibration.
- Proven technical documentation skills with demonstrated experience authoring High-Level Designs (HLDs) and maintenance procedures.
- Active NV2 Security Clearance (Negative Vetting Level 2) is strictly mandatory; Positive Vetting (PV) clearance is highly preferred.
- Complete willingness and flexibility to travel regularly to remote regional and overseas international government sites.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication capabilities for stakeholder liaison.
- Mandatory legal eligibility to work in Australia with eligibility to hold required Australian government security clearances.

- Prior professional experience working on Australian government SATCOM programs or overseas diplomatic mission sites.
- Advanced certifications in RF engineering, telecommunications, or defense‑grade communications systems.
