Duration: 3.5 years fixed-term appointment
Remuneration: The successful applicant will receive a Research Living Allowance, at current value of $37,145AUD per annum 2026 full time rate (tax-free stipend), indexed plus allowances as per RTP stipend scholarship conditions at: A tuition fee scholarship and Single Overseas Health Cover (OSHC) will be provided for a successful international awardee.
The Opportunity n
The Monash Japanese Language Education Hub (MJLEH) was established in 1996 with a grant from the Nippon Foundation. Housed in the Japanese Studies Centre and affiliated with the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics (Faculty of Arts), the Hub provides a variety of activities and programs dedicated to improving and supporting the teaching and learning of Japanese in Australia.

The MJLEH Scholarships support graduate researchers to complete a PhD at Monash University on a topic related to the acquisition and/or teaching of Japanese Language and Cultural Literacy. Awardees will also become Fellows of the Nippon Foundation. One award is made available each year, up to a total of two awards to be held concurrently.

- Second language learners and language acquisition

- Teaching of Japanese language and/or cultural competency

- Projects incorporating a multilingual or multinational perspective on Japanese language teaching/learning

- Projects that fulfil these requirements and link to existing research strengths within the Faculty of Arts are especially welcomed.

Candidate Requirements n
The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record in a relevant field (e.g., Languages, Linguistics, Education, or relevant Social Science discipline).
n
In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian (or equivalent international) Honours or Master’s degree (both in a relevant field), with a significant research component and with first-class honours/H1 awarded.

Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus. Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

The successful applicant will be expected to enrol by December 2026 . However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.
