Group Payroll Lead

Lead payroll for a growing organisation
Regent Motors Group is a growing, privately owned automotive group with more than 1,100 employees across multiple dealerships and business entities throughout Australia.
We are seeking an experienced Group Payroll Lead to take ownership of our Group payroll function and lead a small payroll team supporting a complex, high-volume workforce.
This is a senior, hands-on opportunity for an experienced payroll professional who enjoys having ownership of the function, working closely with senior leaders and improving the way payroll operates.
Reporting directly to the Group Financial Controller, you will be responsible for the accurate and compliant delivery of payroll across the Group while leading the payroll team and playing a key role in the implementation of our new Group-wide payroll system.
About the Role
You will take responsibility for the end-to-end payroll function across more than 1,100 employees, multiple entities and locations.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Lead and oversee the end-to-end fortnightly payroll for more than 1,100 employees.
- Personally remain hands-on with payroll processing while providing leadership and oversight to the payroll team.
- Manage and support the Payroll Officer and HR/Payroll Clerk, including training, development and quality oversight.
- Ensure accurate and timely processing of timesheets, leave, overtime, allowances, adjustments, back pay and termination payments.
- Manage monthly commission and DSA payments, including complex remuneration arrangements.
- Ensure payroll is compliant with relevant legislation, Modern Awards, employment conditions and internal policies.
- Manage payroll-related statutory obligations including PAYG, superannuation, payroll tax, child support and workers' compensation.
- Review and interpret Modern Awards and work closely with HR on complex payroll and employee matters.
- Reconcile payroll accounts and prepare payroll and management reports.
- Maintain strong payroll controls,
data integrity and audit-ready records.
- Manage payroll queries and ensure employees and managers receive timely and professional support.
- Monitor legislative and award changes and implement required payroll changes.
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls, automation and efficiency.
- Lead the cleansing and preparation of historical payroll data as part of the Group's systems transformation.
- Play a key role in the implementation and rollout of Aurion across the Group, transitioning employees from our existing Unipay and Employment Hero payroll environments.
- Work closely with HR, Finance and the implementation team to ensure the new payroll system is configured, tested and successfully implemented.
- Support ongoing system optimisation, reporting and process improvement following implementation.
About You
We are looking for an experienced payroll skilled who is confident taking ownership of a large and complex payroll function.
You will ideally bring:
- 7+ years' experience in end-to-end payroll, preferably within a medium to large organisation.
- Experience managing or leading payroll for a large employee population, ideally 1,000+ employees.
- Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, Modern Awards and statutory requirements.
- Experience with Unipay, Employment Hero and/or Aurion will be highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience with complex payroll environments, including commissions, incentives, allowances and varying remuneration structures.
- Previous experience leading, supervising or mentoring payroll team members.
- Strong payroll reconciliation, reporting and analytical skills.
- Experience with payroll system implementation, migration, testing or process improvement.
- The ability to confidently interpret awards and identify potential payroll compliance issues.
- Excellent attention to detail and a strong understanding of payroll controls.
- The confidence to work autonomously and take ownership of outcomes.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with employees, managers, HR, Finance and senior leadership.
Experience within the automotive, retail, sales or another commission-based industry will be highly regarded, particularly where you have managed complex sales-based remuneration.
