Legal Counsel – Tasracing Integrity Unit

Use your legal expertise where fairness, animal welfare and public confidence matter.

Tasracing is seeking a Legal Counsel to join our Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU). In this role, you will advise on investigations and enforcement, prepare matters for hearing, and help ensure decisions across thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing are evidence-based and legally sound.

If you enjoy practical legal problem-solving, advocacy and working closely with investigators and decision-makers, we would love to hear from you.

About Us:

At Tasracing, racing is our passion. Tasracing is Tasmania's Principal Racing Authority, entrusted with the comprehensive development and promotion of the state's racing industry. As the governing body, we oversee the ongoing growth of racing and breeding, market Tasmanian racing to local, national, and international audiences, fund race clubs, provide stakes and prize money, manage racing venues, and ensure the smooth operation of race day activities. Our work is driven by a commitment to growing and sustaining the racing industry, with a strong focus on animal welfare and integrity.

With over 150 years of history and a team of over 250 employees, we’re committed to building a united and vibrant industry Tasmania can be proud of.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Chief Racing Integrity Officer, you will provide legal advice and advocacy for the TIU and advice on integrity-related matters to Tasracing’s Board and relevant committees. You will work alongside Stewards, Investigators and animal welfare specialists, advising on charges, evidence, investigative powers, procedural fairness and regulatory risk across all three racing codes.

This full-time role is based at Ladbrokes Park Elwick in Glenorchy.

It may involve travel to hearings and inquiries across Tasmania and timely advice on urgent race day or investigative matters outside standard hours.

In This Role You'll...

- Draft and settle charges and review briefs of evidence, ensuring allegations are supported and clearly framed.

- Advise investigators and Stewards on investigative powers, evidence, disclosure and procedural fairness.

- Prepare submissions and represent or support the TIU at inquiries, disciplinary hearings and appeals.

- Provide practical advice on the Rules of Racing, legislation, enforcement options and litigation risk.

- Work with external counsel when matters are briefed out and help maintain consistent legal precedents.

- Contribute legal input to integrity policies, governance matters and regulatory reporting.

You'll succeed if you are:

- A explicit, persuasive communicator who can explain complex legal issues in practical terms

- A confident advocate who prepares thoroughly and exercises sound judgement

- Comfortable balancing urgent matters with careful, defensible legal work

- Collaborative, impartial and committed to confidentiality and professional integrity

You'll likely bring experience in:

- Admission, or eligibility for admission, as an Australian legal practitioner, with the ability to hold an unrestricted practising certificate in Tasmania

- Around 4-6 years’ post-admission experience; however,

applicants with slightly less experience who can demonstrate strong relevant capability will also be considered

- Drafting charges, allegations, notices and submissions, and preparing or assessing briefs of evidence

- Advocacy before courts, tribunals, disciplinary panels or comparable decision-making bodies

- Applying procedural fairness, evidence and statutory interpretation principles in a regulatory setting

- Experience in racing, sporting integrity or another regulatory workplace would be an advantage but is not essential.

Why Choose Tasracing:

Join Tasracing and contribute to fair and trusted racing across Tasmania. You will work on varied legal matters with people who care deeply about animal welfare and integrity, while being part of a connected workplace that invests in its people.

What We Offer:

- Family-Friendly Culture: Enjoy 12 weeks of fully paid gender-neutral parental leave

- Career Development: Benefit from our RACE program, dedicated to your professional growth

- Wellbeing Focus: Annual wellness rebate, discounted private health insurance, discounted gym memberships, fortnightly boot camp, daily 5-minute arms exercises, optional team fitness challenges, and free fruit across all sites

- Team Bonding: Regular morning teas and BBQs, because we love to connect over food at Tasracing
